MOORE NEWS Volume II April 29, 1997 Issue 19 New Members #2 NEW MEMBERS CARL E. MOORE, JR. (Carl_Moore@compuserve.com) *****About a dozen years ago I fell heir to my late Aunt Vivian Moore's genealogy collection, and have been trying to expand on it as time permits. I am a Kentucky native (born 21 Dec 1942), but have lived and worked (patent attorney) in the Chicago area most of my life. My wife, Maria, and I have three daughters; the youngest, a high school sophomore, is still at home. I have traced my Moore family back to Elnathan Moore (ca 1763-1849). Elnathan first appears in the 1787 tax rolls of Culpeper Co VA, his tax paid by Joseph James. By 1791, the Culpeper tax rolls listed an "Elnathan More" and an "Elnathan More, Sr." Elnathan was married in 1788; William Mason, a Baptist minister, performed the ceremony. Elnathan and his family settled in present-day Franklin County KY prior to 1795. Many of his descendants still live in this area. Here's what I have on the first generation of the family; I am a descendant of Elnathan through Henry Scott Moore. 1. Elnathan Moore was born before 1763. He first appears on the 1787 tax list of Culpeper County VA. Elnathan died in 1849 at his farm in Franklin County, Kentucky. He married Mary (Polly) Scott 8 Feb 1788 in Culpeper County, Virginia. She was born before 1774 in Virginia, the daughter of Henry Scott and Sarah. Mary died after 1840 in Franklin County, Kentucky. They had 8 children: 2. F i. Sarah Moore, born before 1797. She married Jacob Roberts 18 Dec 1811 in Franklin County, Kentucky. 3. M ii. Timothy T. Moore, born before 1797. He married Patsy Carr 8 Jun 1814 in Franklin County, Kentucky. Timothy served in the War of 1812 and subsequently moved to Shannon County, Missouri. 4. F iii. Jurasha (Jurasala) Moore, born about 1792. She married Alexander Burk 27 Mar 1811 in Franklin County KY. 5. F iv. Nancy Moore, born before 1799. She married Robert Burk 28 Jul 1814 in Franklin County, Kentucky. 6. M v. John Ransome Moore, born before 1800, died 1850. He married Rachel Robinson 3 Mar 1819 in Franklin County, Kentucky 7. M vi. Henry Scott Moore, born 2 Oct 1802 Franklin County KY, died 27 Mar 1873. He married Margaret Robertson 23 Sep 1824 in Harrison County KY. 8. F vii. Elizabeth Moore, born before 1808. She married Willis Oliver, Jr. 26 Aug 1824 in Franklin County, Kentucky. 9. Mviii. Milton Moore, born before 1815. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PATTI MOORE LININGER (PLinin7843) *****Looking for John Moore born somewhere in PA. 1796 married to Susanna Lowery/Lowry born Virginia 1806 Children born Ohio. Cannot seem to find them. I have a cousin who has been searching since 1976 and I have just been in on it for a year. I do remember from my father that his family had relatives in KY, but his dad had been born in IN, and his grandfather in OH. He thought his great grandparents were in PA which is what the census also says. And I do not know where the Kentucky connection comes in. What we have found out is this family mostly goes by middle names so John could be _?_ John Moore. Did anyone lose a family member from Kentucky who could have been related or did anyone have relatives who could have gone to PA.? One thing that has made me think my dad was right about his grandmother Clayton's people being from Virginia when everyone was looking in Ohio. We found them back to 1619 in VA -- the Claytons. So there is still hope altho I was not the one who found them. William Henry Moore went by Henry and John Hestein Moore married under the name Hestein Moore, but it was 1880 not 1864 as his children believed. Please try to find out who the Scotish Moores are. Maybe someone will find a connection. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TaxiMOMof4@aol.com *****New info on my Moore's as follows: Billy Wayne Moore b- 28 Oct 1928, Nimmons Clay Ark one of 5 kids born to: Carl Moore b-21 Nov 1906 Tn , d- 20 Feb 1978 Paducah, , Kentucky. I refer to Issue 8 - Part B under Joyce: Descendants of William and Martha Moore who came to England from Asia in 1773 (believed to have been missionaries). A son, John, was born in 1775. In 1776 William and Martha with their son, John, came to America and located near Baltimore, Md. When John became a young man, he married Mary Scarborough who was born to Joseph and Sarah Scarborough Dec. 25, 1775. John and Mary were married in Harford County, Md. John died May 20, 1825. Mary died Aug 1, 1854. To John and Mary were born 13 children. After the death of her husband John, Mary with her 12 younger children moved to Ohio and located at Stillwater Creek, 2 miles east of Sewellville, Belmont County, about a mile from Salem Church, close to the log church called the Radicals. The Moores were Presbyterians. In later years, Mary made her home with her son, Joseph, who lived east of Flushing, Ohio in the neighborhood the of country church called Crabapple (Presbyterian). Mary Moore was buried at this place. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JEANNIE (KL2000G@aol.com) *****May I post this information in the newsletter? My husband is in landscaping and I am involved in advocacy work with prison inmates and their families. My hobbies are crafts and genealogy, although I do not have much time to work on either! My Moore line has proved rather difficult as it is in Maine and possibly Canada. Oliver Moores was b. abt.1809 in Pembroke, Maine or Pembroke, Canada. He married Margaret Harris; but he could have had an earlier wife. They had a number of children which I will have to submit later, but the one I am descended from is Ellen Moores or Mores who was born 23 Dec 1860 in Trescott, Washington Co. Maine and married James Ackley. If anyone out there is working on Moores from Washington Co. I would very much like to hear from you. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - HERB CUNNINGHAM (HerbCunnin@aol.com) *****My g-grandfather was James M. Moore. Enclosed is a brief descendancy chart of his family. The family was documented with the exception for Melinda Emma (Moore) Mesure who moved off from the body of the family in the northeast corner of Alabama to California. No one had any knowledge of that family member, but I have just located the death records and obit for both her and her husband Alfred Mesure in Butte Co., CA. James M. Moore is the son of James Walker Moore who was born in SC and died in Gwinnett Co., GA in 1856. No one that I know of has been able to go any further back in the Moore family history than that; however, there is another James Walker Moore of considerable interest, some two generations earlier, who got land grants in Laurens Co., SC in 1766 and 1789. Would be happy to send more detailed records on James M. MOORE and his father, James Walker MOORE, should there be any interest.
