On one of the Dobbin's wills, a Moore Comer witnessed the document. I've been in touch with a Dobbin researcher who is researching this family as well. He's been very insightful and pointed out some interesting facts. He's traced back the Dobbins line to early 1700's VA. He finds them in Albermarle, Goochland, and Nelson Co's. He doesn't believe they moved but just due to the counties changing names. He continually finds some interesting families tied to the Dobbins. Campbell, Montgomery, Bell, Gullett (this one particularly interested him due to our Gulley Moore) and several others. And wherever he finds the Dobbins he always finds an Alexander Moore, including Caswell! Until he contacted me, he thought that "Anne" Dobbin was the daughter of Alexander Moore of Caswell. He had a daughter Lucy that married a Campbell (you'll notice the Burch above has a Campbell middle name). We had the will of Gulley Moore who stated very emphatically who his children were and who they were married to. The name Alexander continues on in our Moore line, but used as a middle name. We have one generation after Gulley that we know very little about. Our James Moore had two older sons born prior to 1790, but we've been unable to find out what their names were. His son Thomas applied for his Rev. war pension and stated that he was the third son of James. My husband descends from James' son Daniel. My husband has a double Moore relationship....being descended from James Alexander Moore and also his sister Nancy C. Moore Goodrich. Our home page has a motto: "What a tangled web we weave, when first we practice to conceive!" We've also been looking into the records of Dr. Morgan Brown. His son married the daughter of Gulley Moore, and his younger brother also married a daughter of Gulley. We just located his Rev. war pension application (all 76 pages of it!) and has been very rich with information. His records also backed up the information that was in James Moores application. This family also appears to be heavily tied with our Moore's. He was born in 1753 in Anson Co., NC and stated that he was in possession of a bible dating from when his family arrived in this country in March of 1638. I hope I haven't bombarded you with too much information all at once, but I felt it was necessary to show all the families of Caswell we knew they had ties with. Please visit my home page for more information and notes and documentation on these families. http://www.rootsweb.com/~sueskay http://www.geocities.com/~sbcc (South Bay Children's Choir) RESEARCH LARRY THOMAS (thomashm@fidnet.com) *****PIKE COUNTY, MISSOURI, Cemetery Inscriptions, Vol. 3-Hartford Township Page 21 Moore Cemetery Information of this cemetery was compiled by Charles Joel Moore from obituaries in the Bowling Green Times, Middletown Chips, Montgomery Standard Papers, and from county records. MOORE MISCELLANY Mark Hardin Taliaferro, born in 1811, was the ninth and youngest child of Charles and Sallie (Burroughs) Taliaferro of Surry County NC. When he was 18, he left the red clay hills of his homeland, became a Baptist preacher and edited the South Western Baptist (Southwest then being Mississippi). In 1857 he returned to the haunts of his childhood and produced a collection of short vignettes titled "Fisher's River Scenes and Characters" which was published by Harper and Brothers. The vignette below, often in the dialect of the 1820 mountaineer, pertains to a member of Moore family who is not yet identified. If anyone knows what Moore was a "Capting" around 1820 or 1825, hope you'll let us know. I 'FAMUS OR NO FAMUS" Fisher's River was one of the last places for the importance of militia musters, in the expressive language of that section, "to give up the ghost." I account for it from the fact that a few old Revolutionary soldiers lived in the community, and kept the 'milteer sperit" always at blood heat in the rising generation. Their musters were semi-annual, held in May and November, and the old "Revolutionaries" were ever present. The "capting," leftenant," "sargint" - all the "ossifers" - were proud to perform "revolutions" before them. "They knowed a thing or two about militeer tactucks, just as well as old Steuben ur Duane tharselves." And the "capting" never thought for once of giving the word "Right face! dismissed!" till they were gravely reviewed by the "old sogers. There was another matter of powerful attraction to the old "Lutionaries" and the "Litia" - the "knock-[em-stiff" that was as punctual in attendance as any of the "patriots." . . . Hamp Hudson with his "licker," were men and things as much looked for as "Capting Moore with his militeer uniform." Hamp Hudson was the only man in that whole country who kept a "still-house" running all the year; the weaker ones would "run dry." Of course, Hamp, and his still-house, and all the appurentances thereof," were well known to the whole country. Hamp also had a noted dog, named "Famus," as famous for being in the distillery as Hamp himself, and quite as well known in that entire region as his master. Now it came to pass in the course of human and dog events that Famus fell into a "mash-tub" and was drowned. It was "narrated" all through the country "that Famus was drowned in a mash-tub, and Hamp had distilled the beer in which Famus was drowned, and was gwine to carry it to May muster to sell." This report produced a powerful sensation in the community, and was the only topic of conversation. All appeared to believe it, and there was a general determination "not to drink one drap uv Hamp's nasty of Famus licker."
