MOORE NEWS Volume II May 7, 1997 Issue 21 New Members NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCTIONS TRINA ROY (Heaven4me2@aol.com) *****Hi... I am related to the Moore's through my grandmother: Marie Elizabeth Moore Lacy. Her parents are Thomas Hunt Moore and Mabel Moore. I really do not have much info except that her family is from up north possibly around Michigan area. Her father was probably born between 1890-1900. I do not have his parent's name...she said they died when she was young and she only called them grandma and grandpa. Both of her parents have died. She really would appreciate any information anyone has about her family. This is fairly new to me but I would love to help her. I know it isn't much to go on, but I would appreciate any help anyone could give. If I can get any more info I will send it. Thanks...I would love to help her. - - - - - - - - - - - - - JOHN PENNYBACKER ( jpennyba@neosoft.com) *****My information includes the following Moore's: Solomon Moore married Willema A. Tate Pennybacker (1832-1860) in 1852. Three children: Magnus, Arthur Lewis, Mary Egbertine (in VA.) Nathan Moore married Elizabeth Pennypacker (b 1809) in Lower Providence, PA.. Six children: Joseph, Amos, Nathan, Norman, Abraham, and Kate Abraham married Martha Hamer. Francis C. Moore married Sarah Pennypacker (b 1836) in Chester Springs, PA. Two children: Francis Warren and Mary Rebecca. . Tobias Moore married Elizabeth Pennybacker (b 6 Mar 1768). One child: Tobias (in VA.) Richard Moore married Virginia Pennybacker (whose father was born in 1803) in Belleville, W. VA. No children noted. Looks as though some Moore's & some Penny(P/B)acker's lived in the same neighborhoods in Virginia & Pennsylvania. I hope someone will find this useful. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Editor's Note: The moon must be right. Note the following two introductions which arrived almost simultaneously. JOBY CLEARY (JCleary777) *****It will be exciting to start exploring my dad's side of the family. I am very new at this. The following is all the info I have on the Moore side. I look forward to this adventure. - - - - - - - - - - - - - ROGER MOORE (CaverArch@aol.com) *****I'm married to Candice Wienede and have two children, twin girls Christine and Katherine, by a previous marriage. (If there's anyone out there who works in Dutch genealogy, I'm interested for my kids. Their maternal grandparents are Dutch citizens residing in the US of rather distinguished Netherlands ancestry: ZIMMERMAN and HELFRICH. Admiral Conrad Emil Helfrich, their great grandfather, signed the Japanese surrender on the Missouri for the Netherlands.) You could say that I was pre-programmed to have an interest in genealogy as a natural consequence of my interest in the past: I'm a professional archeologist who owns a 'cultural resource management firm' in Houston, Texas. (Cultural Resource Management encompasses the archeological and historical investigations that are mandated by various federal and state environmental laws. When a road is built, for example, we survey the route first to make sure it is not going to impact any important archeological sites.) As an archeologist I devote a great deal of my attention to prehistoric (Indian) sites. But I also work considerably with historical archeology, the archeology of European, African-American, and Asian settlement in the New World in historic times. I've done quite a few historical excavations in the Texas urban centers of Houston (families: the Irish John Kennedys and William L. Foleys) and Galveston (the J. M. Browns of Ahston Villa). My recent burst of genealogical interest was in fact prompted by a 'fishing expedition' for sources of on-line historical data that I could use in my work. (This fishing expedition was in turn prompted by our purchase of Family Tree Maker so that my wife could be sent a file that the Paulsen branch of her family from IL had compiled.) I was so impressed with what is available that it reawakened my personal interest in genealogy. I'm also predisposed towards the past by my personal background, something that influenced my choice of careers. My father R. G. Moore, Sr. was 54 when I was born in 1950. His father, in turn (the Green Berry Moore I'm currently researching), was drowned in a storm off the Texas coast in 1897. As a consequence, he was raised by his grandfather, William Edward Rogers. Rogers was a steamboat captain and Confederate veteran. So in terms of socialization (who actually did the child-rearing in the family) I'm a 47-year-old who looks back to the Civil War and beyond in only two 'generations.' I want to be able to contribute to the Moore families efforts as well as be the beneficiary of previous research. Since I've been collecting data rather indiscriminantly (in regard to my narrow genealogical objectives) to use in my work - and since I love playing around with computer database information - I've decided to abstract the Moores from what I have collected and submit it to the list. A first installment is in the attached file. I know very little about my paternal grandfather because he died when my father was only 11 months old - and died far too long ago for anyone living (that I'm in touch with, at least) to have direct knowledge of his origins. He was a coastal steamer captain out of Orange, Orange Co, Texas, and drowned in a hurricane on 12 Sept. 1897. (In case you're wondering, my father - born in 1896, obviously, was 54 when I was born in 1950. And since his father died, he was raised by his mother, spinster aunts, and his river steamer master and Confederate blockade runner grandfather, Captain William E. Rogers. The descendants (1st gen) were born in and for the most part remained in Orange or Jefferson (Port Arthur, Beaumont, Port Neches) counties. Here is the inquiry I'm going to post: MOORE / DOWELL / COOK names, late 18th and early 19th centuries: Are any of the following names familiar? They are almost certainly in my paternal grandfather's line as they all come from a manuscript page handed down to me which appears to be the flyleaf torn from a book. My grandfather was born on September 08, 1848. I have not yet traced his point of origin but I am getting some suggestive clues from Lawrence County, Kentucky and Tennessee. I am a novice at online research, but when I search records I seem to be finding consistent associations, both residential and in terms of intermarriage, in that area between the Moore and Berry families, and even a Green or two. I have also found one instance of a Rogers (my paternal grandmother's line, definitely from Tennessee) occurring in a Berry line; but it may be a red herring, of course: Elizabeth Burleson Rogers-18101: b Abt 1780; d 1846. Be that as it may, here are the list of names and birth dates from the manuscript: Jesse C. MOORE b. 22 Feb, 1797 Alley J. MOORE b. 23 Feb. 1792 Governor Washington MOORE b. 7 Nov. 1820 Emily Caroline DOWELL b. 27 March 1824 Andrew Jackson MOORE b. 12 Jan. 1828 Nancy Josephine COOK b. 5 May 1830 Nelson Lafayette MOORE b. 1 Dec. 1832 It might also help if you post the following along with my mysterious list of Moores. But that might make the posting too long so it's up to you, of course: Descendants of ? Moore 1 ? Hopefully, thru your news letter and being in contact with others researching this surname, I will be able to gather more (no pun intended). Here is all the info I have in the way of a "brief personal biography" and due to the lack of knowledge, it is very succinct. Mary Etta Moore. b. 1835 (location unknown) married Joel Jones, b. 10 Nov 1828 (location unknown). Mary Etta's parents were William Moore and Marsha Stanton. Mary Etta and Joel had seven children between 1853 and 1864. Sylvia Elizabeth Jones was born in Nebraka and Joel James Jones was born in Iowa. So, Mary Etta (Moore) and her husband Joel Jones certainly lived in those two states. I have no information at all on William Moore and wife Marsha Stanton. I would certainly be appreciative of any information on these families or for any leads. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (LLC244@aol.com) [Editor's Note: Remember our "Grandfather's Story" from the Christmas issue? Here's one of James Fitzpatrick's brothers. We only need one more of the three brothers who were conscripted by the British in Ireland and sent as soldiers to America who originated American Moore families under the surname of their mother.] *****I have been doing genealogy for about 20 yrs. We were both born and raised in Norfolk, Va. I came to Newport News in 1939 looking for work. Found it in the shipyard and retired from there in 1976. We have 2 children and 2 grandchildren. We are both avid genealogists(?) and have done quite a lot of research on the Moore family of New Kent Co. and the Traywick family of eastern North Carolina. We have gone back as far as the early 1700's on the Moore family and also he Traywick family. On my grandmother's side, we have gone back as far as the 1600's in Germany. If you need any more info on us, I will be glad to furnish it. By the way, my hobbies are mainly golf and walking which I do quite a bit of. __________________________________________________________________ Back issues of MOORE NEWS available at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/news __________________________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 7 May 1997
