MOORE NEWS Volume II May 16, 1997 Issue 22 New Members NEW MEMBERS MAGGIE MOORE (mdale1@san.rr.com) *****I have Moore lines on both sides, but am sending info on the farthest back. This maternal info comes from a family letter written in the 1970's. When the Pilgrims first went to Holland in 1608, there was among their number one William Moore, who far from being distressed by the integration of some Pilgrims with the Dutch, married a nice Dutch girl, settled down and lived happily ever after in Leyden. Several generations later, in 1664, one of his descendants was not so satisfied, and decided to emigrate to the New World, where he landed in Philadelphia, from whence he subsequently moved to Reading, Pa., where our ancestor the Tory was still living in 1776. Shortly after the War of 1812, one of his male descendants moved to Lockport, N.Y. with his two small sons Jonas and Josiah. There he bought or built a stone farm house, with a walled court in front. Josiah became an art collector and eventually built himself a house "down by the water" where he lived and died a bachelor. Jonas, our great-grandfather, married a local girl whose Christian name was Margaret. A picture of her suggests Pennsylvania Dutch ancestry. They had two sons, William (b.1848 d. Feb 1919) and Chauncey, and one daughter, Lavinia. The other two children did not marry, but must have lived to grow up, as my mother could remember them both. Here's the info on my father's line. As far as I know, we are all Southerners born in GA since Samuel. Samuel L. Moore, b. abt 1830 NC, d. abt. Nov. 1890 Thomasville, Thomas Co.,GA, and wife Charlotte N., b. abt. 1830 NY, d. Jan 1874 Quitman, Brooks Co., GA. Their children were: 1- Eli S., b. abt. 1847 VA 2- Samuel, b. abt. 1848 GA, 3- Emily, b. abt. 1849 FL (m. E. T. Kendrick, Aug. 23, 1873 in Whigham, Decatur Co., GA) 4- Joseph, b. abt 1851 GA 5- William R., b. abt. 1852 GA 6- Douglas, b. abt. 1854 GA, Hansell, b. abt. 1855 GA 7- Jackson, b. abt. 1857 GA 8- Mary, b. abt. 1860 9- Estell, b. abt. 1862 GA 10- Minnie, b. abt. 1864 GA 11- Luella, b. abt. 1866 12- James Stanley, Sr. b. Oct. 17, 1868 Quitman, Brooks Co., GA, (m. Effie May Bush Aug. 17, 1891, Atlanta, Fulton Co., GA),d. Mar. 16, 1918 Atlanta, Fulton Co.,GA. I have information about Samuel's life in GA, as he was the brickmason for the first courthouse, was an early postmaster, and participated in many other firsts in Quitman, GA (founded 1859) in Quitman. The oldest sons were also brickmasons. Eli (Spencer?) and Samuel (Lewis?) were young Confederate soldiers. If this rings any bells with anyone, I would love to hear about it! - - - - - - - - - - - ETAINE (etaine@aol.com) *****I'm a Moore by adoption -- I guess. My father was reared by his aunt and uncle in Tifton, Tift Co., GA. Dr. Henry B. Moore was a pharmacist and was married to Mervin Stoy Shaw. They had had two of their own children: Henry B. Moore, Jr. and Dorothy Louise Moore nee Reader. My father was Claxton Smith Moore ... He changed his last name to save confusion when he went into the service during WWII. - - - - - - - - - - - WILLIAM MOORE (Du Willy@aol.com) *****Great to find that there is a Moore Family Study Newsletter. I am a descendant of James Moore (died abt 1795) at Walker's Creek near Jump Mountain in Rockbridge County VA. He was married to Jane Walker in 1734, and had a brother, Joseph Moore. James and Jane Walker Moore had a child, John Moore, who married Mary Ann Ellet and died in Abbeville, SC. They had 10 children born between 1736 and 1751 which include Mary Moore who married Alexander Stuart and a Mr. Paxton. She died in Brownsburg, ViA . Another child was Eliab B. Moore born in 1751 in Virginia and married Rebecca Bryant. They moved to Anderson County, S.C. where he died on Feb.18,1826. They had three sons that I know of: Eliab B. Moore, Jr., James Moore, and Samuel Moore. Other names in the family records are Wardlaw, McPheeters, Poag, Brown, Coalter, Major, Pruitt and Pearman. I am trying to fill out the branches of my family that have been lost. I think that James and Joseph came to America, Chester County, PA, from Ireland . I have a lot more information on the Family if can find any matches. - - - - - - - - - - - DARLENE HOMME (hommer@telusplanet.net) *****Here are some of the Moore family that I am researching: Ann Moore b. Samuel was the son of Leonard Dix and Sarah. Samuel and Mary had a daughter, Sarah Dix, b. 6 June 1685 in Wethersfield, CT. She married Jonathan Nott 3 April 1707 in Wethersfield. That's all the information I have on the Moores. - - - - - - - - - - - (Gwillcamp@aol.com) *****I have been a subscriber to Moore News for about a month but I don't believe I really introduced myself. I am a newcomer to genealogy but was fortunate enough to have several of my family lines well documented by an aunt. BUT! The Moore line is a blank. All of you seem to have so much definite information that I am ashamed to bring out my bits and pieces before you. But I guess we are all here to learn and help each other so here goes. My ancestress is Alcey Moore, aka Ailsey, Allsey, born about 1785 and her father is believed to be a Samuel Moore. I do know that Alcey married Jacob Hufstedler about 1804 in York Co. SC. In the 1790 and 1800 censuses of York Co. a Samuel Moore was living near the Hufstedler families. After Alcey's marriage, she and Jacob moved first to Anderson Co. TN, then to Hickman Co. TN, and finally, when she and Jacob were in their sixties, to Randolph Co. AR. They both died there, Jacob in 1860 and Alcey sometime after 1866. Alcey confuses things a bit by giving her birthplace as NC in one census and VA in another. It is generally believed to be VA and the date to be 1785. The name Alcey was used for several generations in the Hufstedler family and later in both the Bates and Rockwell descendants. A boy was even named Alcy! Alcey named one of her children Samuel Moore Hufstedler and Moore as a middle name also continued to be used in the family for some generations. I hope some one has a Samuel with a daughter, Alcey in their list of Moores. Do not be surprised if you do not get an immediate response to a message as my husband and I are "Snowbirds" and are leaving Louisiana for our summer "digs" in Oregon. We will be on the road for about two weeks but I will try to pick up my e-mail as soon as we are in Oregon. - - - - - - - - - - - DEBBIE PHILLIPS (belle@futura.net) *****I am researching my Moore family heritage. MARTIN (YUQU67A@prodigy.com) *****I guess I'll start with a brief bio of me: I am currently a substitute teacher with many jobs while trying to find a permanent teaching position. I graduated from Stephen F Austin State University in 1990. I recently spent 3 years in Iowa with my sister, but moved back to Texas last summer. I enjoy country music and genealogy. I have done much of my research on the web and have made several new friends all around the country. I have also found many "cousins". I have discovered I have distant connections to Wild Bill Hicock, US Grant, and Charlamagne. I recently discovered information on my 4th great-grandmother's family. Her mother was a Moore. Julia Moore was born 9 February 1817 in Granby, Hartford, CT and died 11 Dec 1852 in Ill or Oh. I have yet to find any record of her birth to find her parents. She married Thomas Barnes, Jr(b. 3 Feb 1791, Southington, Hartford, CT; d. 14 Aug 1880, IL?) on 9 Feb 1817 in Granby, Hartford, CT. They had: 1.Thomas Henry Barnes(chr 2 Aug 1818, Granby, Hartford, CT) 2. Julius Elizur Barnes(b. 23 Jun 1820, chr 17 Sept 1820, Granby, Hartford, CT; d. 6 Dec 1821, CT) 3. Julia Eliza Barnes, twin to Julius(b. 23 Jun 1820; chr 17 Sept 1820, Granby, Hartford, CT; d. Cottage Grove, Dane, WI) married William Drakeley(b.10 Jul 1810, Woodbury, Litchfield, CT) 6 Dec 1840 in Loraine co, OH.* 4 Julius Elizur Barnes(b. 28 Jun 1823; d. 8 Dec 1898) 5. Charles C Barnes(b. 1825; d. 1 Jun 1863) 6. Walter Barnes(b. 1829, NY) reportedly wounded at Vicksburg, MS 7. Perces Barnes(b. 1833, OH) 8. Enos H Barnes(b. 1838, Carlisle, Lorain, Il; d. Vicksburh, MS). It is said in many Barnes circles that this family moved on to Brooklyn, Schuyler, Il, but they also had Julia Eliza Barnes as marrying someone totally different in McHenrey, IL. I'd appreciate any information from anyone. - - - - - - - - - - - VICKI RINGER (vringer@aol.com) *****I born in Bakersfield, Kern Co.,California. I am researching my Moore line but have very little to start with. My father was Robert Benjamin Moore, b: July 1914 in California, probably in Calaveras or Tulare Co. He died June, 1980, in Northern California. His father was Robert Moore Sr., birth date and location unknown, but was probably born in California, d: 1917 in France. His mother was Elsie Sharp, born 1897 in Tulare or Mariposa Co. Robert Moore Sr. 's father was Benjamin Moore, birth date and location unknown, d: date unknown, near Sanger, California. Benjamin Moore had one known sibling, an Ed or Edward Moore who died in Yountville, California. That's the extent of the known facts. If anyone has any information too share on these Moores, I would really appreciate it. I need to get them out of California! - - - - - - - - - - - PAT DOYLE (PatDoyle) *****I have not sent in my Moore info because I have so little, but decided that someone out there may have a connection for me. James Moore married Mary Larkin 6 Jan. 1872. They were married in a Catholic church in New Orleans, La. Both were born in Ireland. They had only two children, Katie, my grandmother, and Thomas Joseph, who died at the age of 15 in New Orleans. I am looking for any Ireland-New Orleans connections for Irish Catholic Moore's. I don't know at what age James came to the U.S., if he went to the east coast first, or if he came here with other relatives.
