MOORE NEWS Volume II May 28, 1997 Issue 24 SALUTATIONS Announcement about Back Issue Web Site: DOUG MOORE who works behind the scenes in behalf of all of us by managing the Back Issues Web Site will be out of town for at least three weeks. He will update the web site when he returns. Doug, I'd like to that this opportunity to thank you from all MOORE NEWS subscribers for your contribution to our effort. As subscribers send copies of some of their exchanges to me, I often see one subscriber referring another to information they can access through the web site. You're providing a tremendous service to all of us. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - JACK MOORE (Jacknbetty@aol.com) is an investigator of credit card fraud and sends along the following advice. I've had an online experience similar to Jack's on two occasions, so this con technique is not unusual and will probably become more prevalent. Thanks, Jack, this is an area we all have concerns about. We appreciate your alerting us on this problem. *****I'll try to explain what occurred. . . While logging on, I was having some difficulty bringing up my E-mail - an instant message appeared on the upper left of the screen from OALsecrep saying that there was a problem on the account and to reenter my AOL info, i.e., Name, Address, Telephone, Credit Card No, & Expiration date along with a password for clarification. A bell went off in my thick skull which said, AOL never asks for billing info or passwords on line. I did notice that the top of the screen also said ACL, so I immediately called AOL to make a change of my credit info, the internal password has been changed only. MOST IMPORTANT I called my Credit Card Company and reported the account number may have been compromised, so the account was closed and I will get a new account and card in a few days. These cons on the net are getting smarter every day and each of us has to be alert. Call your On-Line Provider before giving any info to any one on-line. When this happens: You should contact the On-Line Provider to notify them of the attempt and change the password immediately. If the cons get your credit card account number: call immediately to report the card as lost or stolen and tell them that the number was given to a third party. They will cancel the card to preclude any charges being made. I also recommend that the credit card company be called in several days to assure that no new charges have occurred. If so, dispute those charges. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Two MOORE NEWS subscribers have other Moore resources to announce, one a book and one a web site. GRACE-MARIE MOORE HACKWELL (Shortyhack@aol.com) has a web site that will be another resource for some of our Moore families. ***** My Moores came from West Virginia . My great, great grandfather was Nimrod Moore born in 1829 , son of Michael, son of Jacob, son of Michael, son of Phillip. Biography Address: << http://members.aol.com/Shortyhack/Biography.html >> Nimrod married Rebecca Phillips and they had 11 children. I am descended from their son Eli Morgan Moore and his wife Tamzon John, both of Green County, PA. The Moore Family Research Page is for the gathering and sharing of information on the ancestors and descendants of Nimrod and Rebecca Moore. Many of the Moores of Green County and Washington County, PA are descended from the many sons of Nimrod. Some related families are: John, Guthrie, Dulany, Pickenpaugh, Phillips, Yeager, Wisecarvers, Haughts, Orndorf, Lemley, Fry, Yoho, Shane. Address: << http://members.aol.com/Shortyhack/moore.html >> The Moore Family Queries is for queries about Moore ancestors, specifically (but not limited to) those who resided in West Virginia and South- Western Pennsylvania (some with earlier roots in Maryland and Virginia). This page is also for the listing of Moore ancestors. This will be a "who's who" directory of the Moore family. << http://members.aol.com/Shortyhack/Biography.html >> Anyone who has Moores in these areas are invited to send their information to : Grace-Marie Moore Hackwell at Shortyhack@aol.com. But who knows, it may be the same line!!!. I am looking for ANY information on my Great Grandfather Madison Moore. According to Family Bible records he was born Aug 1832 in Madison, IN. He married Armilda Ama Susan Jane GRIFFIN Oct 30, 1864 in Madison, KY. His name (Madison) has been verified by marriage records and the place of marriage is correct according to these records. His daughter Mary Frances (Mollie) Moore Sanford was my grandmother. Mary Frances was born in Winchester, KY in Oct. 1865. There is a Madison Moore listed in the Montgomery Co. IN Census for 1860. I am not sure if this is my Madison or not. From there he disappears from the face of the earth. Armilda is buried in Putman Co. IN. I have searched and searched. I have found my Sanford line back 10 generations, but for the life of me Madison is a mystery. If any one knows of him or has a clue PLEASE let me know.Date: RESPONSES AL JOHNSTON (algjohnston@presto.net) wishes to correct some information in his post of last week. *****I just heard from MARGRETTE (maggeD@aol.com) & i find the data printed with bio intro contained TWO MISTAKES! 1. This was such an interesting exchange, I thought everyone would enjoy it. ******I just wanted to write and let you know how much I enjoy the MOORE NEWS. I had written you several weeks ago re: a Nathaniel Moore (Guilford Co., NC) who was a bondsman for my proven ancestor, John PAVEY. This morning I was sitting down and really going through things, and found some very interesting things I wanted to pass on. The May 7th News had in it a response from LYNN PERKINS (nit@arn.net) in which he mentions (among others) Joseph Iddings Moore. Joseph Iddings and (my?) Nathaniel Moore were both witnesses in 1798 to the will of James Martin in Guilford Co., N.C. I wrote and passed that along to Lynn. [Editor's Note: Information from Lynn is that Marsha's information has opened up a whole new base for his search and he is now enjoying incredible success in defining his Moore family which had so long alluded him.] I've had some pretty extensive research done (by a great gal) in Guilford Co. She's been on the look out for the Moore's to see if she can connect them to my PAVEY family. She sent me a lot of things (of which I have yet to complete going through), and in it was (from) "Early Families of the North Carolina Counties of Rockingham and Stokes with Revolutionary Service" - The HANBY family. When I found this I could remember I'd seen this name before and have been almost tearing my computer records apart looking for where I'd seen that name before. Then, this a.m. I found your May 15 NEWS, and there they were!!! My researcher did not send me all that there apparently was on this family, but if anyone is interested I'm sure they can get the information. It was compiled and published by members of the James Hunter Chapter, National Society Daughters of American Rev. of Madison, N.C., 1977. At one time it could be ordered from: Miss Edith Mitchell, 123 E. Murphy St., Madison, N.C. 27025. What I have starts at page 41, lists Jonathan Hanby, b: 1741, d: 26 Mar 1817 Patrick Co., VA; md: 6 Apr 1769 Sarah (Sally) Dalton ... The wedding took place at the home of the bride's father, Samuel Dalton, on the Mayo River in that part of Guilford Co., NC that later became Rockingham Co., NC. [Editor's Note: If other subscribers have an interest in the Hanby family, please let me know. I wrote a 20-page report beginning with Richard Hanby, London and Northampton Co VA, 1642 through the NJ migration and to the VA/NC family of Jonathan and David Hanby who died in the 1800s. I'm happy to share this information.) - - - - - - - - - - - - LYNN PERKINS (nit@arn.net) *****Thought I would comment on your Moore/Hanby Related families from last week's issue. I find it very interesting that some of my lines are similar: Scott, Thompson, Moore and Reeves. I have Scotts ca 1772 neighbors with Moores. I have Thompsons neighbors with Scotts, I have Reeves neighbors with both. They intermarry and are neighbors from 1767-1910 in their migration path from PA to Del. to VA to NC, to SC, GA AL and TX. In GA they migrated and tended to own land adjacent to the Cherokee and Creek Indian lands. They traveled together, farmed together, intermarried, and went to church together. When they arrived in Mt. Calm, Limestone Co. TX around 1896 the little Baptist church of a total of 120 members were all related, and those that were not related had came from same neighborhood in AL. About an average of 100 descendants of those Moore-Scott-Reeves families are still meeting every year at a reunion that has been held since 1934. The relationships have widened but the interests, and associations are still the same. The only difference in modern day is we all do not live in the same neighborhood. If we did there would still be intermarriages. Most of us attending the reunion now are 4th, 5th and 6th cousins with numerous surnames other than Moore, but there is still a whole bunch with the surname Moore. Everywhere ANCESTORS of this group lived near each other for any period they intermarried. We can see family characteristics and genes pop up everywhere. In 1988 saw one of my grandfather's Moore cousins, 4th or 5th generations, do a jig to some Alabama Bluegrass fiddle, banjo and guitar music. My grandfather died in 1970, but he was doing a jig right before my eyes in 1988. The majority of this group is not into genealogy study. If you look around you would not have to study the records to determine they are all related, you see it in a twinkle of an eye, the sound of someone's laughter, or in their children. I am certain this is not unique to "just my Moore family" because I find it in other lines that I do not know as well as my Moore-Reeves-Scott family. Thanks for all the research and the NEWSLETTER! You are doing great with the Colonial Moore Study! - - - - - - - - - - - - - SUSAN SIMMONS (simmons@inficad.com) is not a MOORE NEWS subscriber. "Nimrod Moore divorce Sarah Jones in Hamilton Co., TN in 1833. Sarah and children lived in Hamilton Co., and show on the 1850 census with Sarah as head of Household. Nimrod reported to have died abt 1856. Unknown location. 2. This query had no name on it, but came from Bryan, TX. Nimrod, Fredrick Jones, and James Marion migrated to Arkansas from Tennessee before the civil war. All three were brothers who migrated to Johnson Con., Arkansas from Hamilton Co., Tenn. between 1850 and 1860. Fredrick and James served in the military during the war, with James dying of typhoid in 1864. Nimrod died that same year, but it is not known if his death was war or military related. Fredrick survived the war and adopted James' son, John Fredrick Moore. Nimrod's sons, James and William Taylor Moore were adopted by his widow's second husband, William Hall.
