MOORE NEWS Volume II June 7 1997 Issue 27 SALUTATIONS HAPPY BIRTHDAY, MOORE NEWS! WE WERE ONE YEAR OLD ON JUNE 5, 1997. Judy Alley sent the message on May 30, 1996 to six AOL inquirers that started us on our adventure of discovery: Tom Moore (TMoore7771), Bill Huckaby (TBeng), Lori (HuckLor), Joyce Browning (JBrown7169), Linda Fulmer (LBFULMER), Ramona Brush-Gullion (RamonaBG), and C. F. Moore (Cfmoor). Said Judy: "I noticed there are quite a few "on liners" who are working on the Moores. We should get together." One week later, six more people joined our venture: Becky Moore Rodrigues (LadyBec), Bill Cole (CAPT C), Bob Moore (Patwarnes), Harriett Eagle (HarrietMI), and Sandy Sanford (GOLFOGEY). Thus, began our joint effort to share, compare, and search together in the hope that by combining our information and resources, we would realize gains in researching our family history. I volunteered to be the Hub because I had recently retired and thought it would be an interesting project. * Over 1,000 pages of text have been delivered to subscribers and today a minimum of two issues is distributed weekly. * MOORE NEWS is the catalyst that brings together cousins who never knew one another before. They combine their resources to focus on their common Moore lines for more effective understanding of their heritage, and they share it with the rest of us. As we move forward, we find that we are more 'related' than we ever imagined we were. * At least one group formed from MOORE NEWS subscribers has trampled along overgrown mountain paths to search out home sites and the final resting place of Moore ancestors long gone. * MOORE NEWS has become a premier distributor of new, ground breaking research about American Moore ancestors. Search for the early Chesapeake Moore family is ongoing and has much ground to cover. Chesapeake Moore descendants lived in at least eight of the original thirteen colonies: Delaware, Georgia, Maryland, New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, and Virginia. * The search for our Moore ancestors is now extending across the Atlantic Ocean to discover the roots of these early American families. Moore links have been found also in the Atlantic islands: Barbadoes, Jamacai, West Indies, Summers Island (Bermuda), Nova Scotia. * MOORE NEWS has linked hands with other organized research efforts. With the cooperation of Terri Bradshaw O'Neill, we distributed information about the very early South Carolina family of James Moore, colonial Governor, whose early descendants are found in Canada, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Bill Moore of San Francisco, another Moore chronicler, contributes his talent in the search of the Chesapeake and English Moore families. * We have attempted to attract more information about the New England Moore families, but our northeastern Moores continue to feel that they are drowning in Moores from the other two-thirds of the country. As an appeasement, MOORE NEWS has afforded them opportunities to partner and share resources with each other. - - - - May we all continue to find satisfaction from this joint venture and increase our knowledge and appreciation of our Moore family(s). - - - - - - - - - - - - Some subscribers are seeking ancestors who have a Native American heritage. The subscriber of another service gave permission to MOORE NEWS to circulate this information. *****Just came across something in the latest "Louisiana Genealogical Register" that may be of help to those searching for their Cherokee ancestors. To order, send for: "Where Are My Cherokees," by Sandi Garrett. Soft cover, 36 pages. Price is $7.50 postpaid. Order from Cherokee Woman Publishing Co., P.O. Box 48, Spavinaw, OK 74366. Blurb says it gives instructions for finding Cherokee ancestors, making application for Tribal membership, and rights associated with card-carrying Cherokees (eligibility for minority scholarships). Another book, "Only the Names remain, Volume 6. Tahlequah and Skin Bayou Districts." Same author as above. Spiral bound, 169 pages, index. Price $25.00 postpaid. Author continues identification of Cherokee ancestors in basically what is today Cherokee and Sequoyah County. Blurb says author has facilitated the search for ancestors, many of whom did not have a "white" name, a last name or assumed more than one name. Order from Cherokee Woman Publishing Co. also. QUERIES PAT JOHNS (Patjohns13@aol.com) *****I am searching for a clue to the parents and siblings of my James Moore b. 21 Mar 1789 in NC and d. 21 Aug 1865 Monroe Co MS. Some think his middle name was Field. He married 1) Abigail Woods (1793-1843 dtr of Peter Woods & Jael Kavanaugh) on 23 Sep 1813 in Franklin Co TN; 2) Bidda T Moore by 1850; and 3) Catherine Bennett in Monroe Co MS by 1858. Abigail Woods is believed to be the mother of his 12 children: Martha Ann, Thomas Collins, Archibald Woods, Mary F, John Woods, Jael Angeline, Sarah Adaline, William Hudson, James Kavanaugh, Abigail Virginia, Littleton Wilde and Henry Clay. All children were born 1814-1837 in or around Sulligent, Lamar Co AL. James may have sold land in Bedford Co TN in 1810, Lincoln Co TN in 1820 and Wilson Co TN where a Wm Moore witnessed land sold in 1820. It is also stated he was often elected to Alabama Senate & House of Reps from Marion Co AL early 1820's. James Moore MAY have had brother named Stephen. A Stephen R Moore (died prisoner of Northern Army in 1864) had family in Lauderdale Co. AL. He had children Horatio R b. 1833 m. Annie Hunt, John, Robert J, Hugh B, James Knox, Sarah m. a Millican, Rebecca m. a Patrick. Some report that my James' father was a Robert Moore b. Ireland. Robert is said to have had brothers Hugh and Patrick. I've seen no good research on these statements and would appreciate any assistance. - - - - - - - - - - - - ROSE VOSLER (PokeAdell@aol.com) is responding to the Query posted by BEVERLY McNALLY (BJane@aol.com) ***** I am looking for Moore in NJ also, although I don't see a connection between mine and yours. My Moore was in Hunterdon Co. NJ. All I know is that Susannah Moore born 1805 in NJ married in 1829 George F. Vosseller [my husband's g gf]. She had a brother, John, who later lived in Asbury NJ. I have some Moore info from the Moore family Society- " Moore Research For Us" I will check it out and get back to you. It will take a while, though. Thought I'd connect up with you, as very few folks in MOORE NEWS seem to be doing research on NJ Moores. Most of them are Southern Moores'. So when I see anyone looking in NJ, I link up. Never know when you might find a connection. [Editor's Note: Rose plans to compile some of her New Jersey information for MOORE NEWS readers. This information may be relevant to both the NJ Moores and the southern Moore family as research has now shown that some Moore some descendants of the Eastern Shore and South of the James River moved around 1700 to MD/NJ/DE/PA. Other descendants of these families remained in the Chesapeake area. The ongoing research of the early Chesapeake Moores is relevant to Moores in areas north of the Chesapeake as well as those south and west.] RESPONSES JOYCE BROWNING (JBrown7169@aol.com) Kinda stunned. Yep! That's what I am. At least three subscribers are looking for Greenville or Granville Moore - the same person? And now I find an answer. Greenville Moore is probably a descendant of my 'orphan' ancestor, Rodeham Moore of Patrick Co VA. Now all you new found descendants of 'my' orphan can join rest of us who search for Rodeham Moore's origins. Welcome and hope you don't have to wait as long as we already have. . . from the second issue of MOORE NEWS, as submitted by our perennial responder . . . ****BOB MOORE (Patwarnes@aol.com) A distant cousin of mine sent me an article on Lawrence Co., Missouri: Rodeham Moore, b. 1744; d. 1811, Patrick Co., Virginia. He married Elizabeth Gallahue, daughter of William and Ann (Kenner) Gallahue. Their son, John Moore was born in VA., and he married Elizabeth Williams, daughter of John and Margaret (Edgeman) Williams, and a sister to Judge John Williams who made Lawrence County's (MO) first settlement. John and Elizabeth Moore had 10 children: Greenville, believed to have gone to Texas, Roadhame; Elizabeth; John Williams; Alfred; Ann; Gollahugh; Cynthia A.; Luetsey; and George Moore. John Williams Moore, b. 12 Feb 1815, in East Tennessee. In 1838, he moved to Lawrence county, Missouri. He married Harriet R. Lebow, b. 19 June 1823. - - - - - - - - - - - - - PATTI MOORE LININGER (pvlininger@juno.com) responds to a Query from CHARLES MOORE (mailman@CITCOM.NET) ****I, too, have Moore's in Muskingum county, Ohio and all so Perry co. Where I do not have any of your names on my list, there is a possible connection that I believe is worth exploring. The first indication is your Charles Clayton Moore. I have found that in my family, they have gone back generation and used family names as first or middle names. In in your Charles W., does the W stand for Wesley. That is a middle name that shows up a lot in this family along with James Evertt(?) What I have is John Moore born 1796 PA. married a Susanna ? ( Mouser, Lowery) 1806 VA. Children born in Zanesvill, Muskingum and Shawnee, Perry Co: Abraham Moore 1828 +Susan Mobry Sarah Ann Moore 1830 + John Carmichael Mary. Moore 1835 Margaret E. Moore + Roberts Miles. I have names of children and some grand children. William Henrys Moore 1837 + Elizabeth Ann Clayton. I have names of all nine of their children (This is my line and there are 3 or us descended from 3 different children working on the Moore Clayton line + 3 of the Clayton's.) John Hestein Moore 1832 + Lucy Ellen Clayton + children (sister of Elizabeth) Cynthia Levena Moore 1847 + Levi H. Colcher. Some stayed in Ohio, others moved to Indiana and then from there some moved to MO. It seems that the migration was of several families's while part of a family stayed behind. Because of this pattern, I would believe that my John Moore was probably in Ohio with relatives, as yet unknown. I know my Moore's were a close family and tried to maintain contact. One of my Father's aunts named her son after a Clayton ancestor two generations back. I will gladly send anything else I have on mine. Two cousins are leaving, or have already left, for Ohio to do more research. Perhaps they will have run into information on your Moore's - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - WILLIAM L. MOORE (Du Willy) responds to information submitted by PATT FULTON (PattFulton@aol.com) in the New Member issue of May 30, 1997 *****I noticed your inquiry this morning and I may have some useful information. In my Moore family tree there is a James Moore (b.1711 M. Jane Walker in 1734 and died in 1793 in Rockbridge County Va.) They had several children but for now, lets concentrate on Samuel Moore of whom we have no information. We do know that he had a brother John b.1735 and married Jane Walker (Cousin to Jane Walker, his mother). He may have also married Mary Ann Ellett, but in any case they had several children including Elias B. Moore Sr. b.1751( who is my ancestor), William Moore, Samuel Moore (who fought and died in the Revolutionary War) also. This Samuel Moore, son of James Moore, could be the father of your Samuel Moore who was born on July 14, 1761. The ages would correspond roughly to those of his brother John and his son Elias. If this helps you figure out how the Moores got to Kentucky, let me know as I have a whole lot of Cousins on the eastern slopes that you need to know about. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - KIM AMATRUDO (Amagk) *****I put an inquiry in your newsletter a couple of months ago and got a response from Anne Townsend who was able to fill me in on a few more of my Moore Line. COLONIAL MOORES BILL MOORE (Bill_Moore_at_LPPI@CCMAIL.UCSF.EDU) is the compiler of "Newsletter for the Descendants of John Moore (d. 1777) of Albemarle Co VA." Bill asked me to also credit the late Grace Moore and Joyce Summers of Winston-Salem who sent the will to him. Matthew Moore, the son of John Moore of Albemarle Co, married Letitia Dalton, oldest daughter of Samuel and Anne Redd Dalton. This exceedingly comprehensive will is a valuable resource for anyone who researches in the lower VA Piedmont or upper NC Piedmont. The Matthew Moores moved from Albemarle County to the Sauratown Mountains in Stokes Co NC. There are many names cited in this will in addition to the Moore's large family. Bill Moore is sharing in the search for the Chesapeake Moores; and he is the primary researcher of Moore roots in England. His contributions to ongoing research benefit to all MOORE NEWS subscribers. *****WILL OF MATTHEW MOORE From the Stokes County, North Carolina, Will Book 1, page 9AE. Submitted by Joyce Summers, from the files of the late Gwen Moore. In the name of God, Amen. I, Matthew Moore, of the County of Stokes and State of North Carolina, being of sound and perfect mind and memory, but calling to mind the mortality of my body and knowing that it is appointed for all men once to die, do this 10th day of October, in the year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and One, make, publish, ordain and appoint this my last will and testament in manner and form as follows: 1ST. I lend to my beloved wife, Lettisha, all that part of the tract of land I purchased of John Walker, lying on the south side of Dan River, in the County of Stokes and on the double creek, including the dwelling place and plantation where I now live, to her as long as she lives and continues a widow. -Item. I also leave to my wife, Lettisha, all that part of the above tract that lies on the north side of Dan River until my son, Tucker Woodson Moore shall arrive at the age of twenty-one years, provided, nevertheless, that if my executors shall think it best, I will that they shall lease or rent it to some responsible person for the only use of my wife, Lettisha, until my son Tucker Woodson shall arrive at the lawful age to inherit same. -Item. I also lend to my wife, Lettisha, all my stock of horses that I have not given to my children, except the three wagon horses, viz: Sterling, Ball and Launch, together with all my stock of hogs and sheep and all my household furniture and plantation tools to her as long as she lives and continues a widow, except it shall appear to my executors absolutely necessary to sell as much thereof as will amount to three hundred dollars, to buy a horse bridle and saddle for each one of my sons: Gabriel, Tucker Woodson and Matthew Redd. -Item. I also lend to my wife, Lettisha, fifteen negroes, Viz: Squion, Sued and Nan, his wife, Agg Philles, Sackey, Reah, Tanny, Grace, Syphox, Sarah, Ledlow, little Sarah, Squire, Jr., Easter [Easten?], and little Nan, as long as she lives and continues my widow. -Item. I also will that at the death of my wife Lettisha, the above mentioned negroes with their increase and all the other property which I have lent to her during her natural life shall be equally divided between my seven sons and three daughters, to them and their heirs forever. 2ND. I give and bequeath unto my son, Samuel Moore, one tract of land containing three hundred acres, be the same more or less, lying on both sides of Fisher's River in the County of Surry, being a part of a tract I purchased of James Sheppard, to him and his heirs forever, which land he has received. -Item. I also give to my son Samuel, one negro man named Bartlett, together with one horse and one feather bed and furniture, to him and his heirs forever, all of which he has received. 3RD. I give to my son, Reuben Moore, one tract of land containing three hundred and ninety acres, more or less, lying on the waters of Snow Creek, whereon he now lives, the land I bought of Thomas Reid; also, one hundred acres adjoining the former which I purchased of Thomas Smith, and also twenty-five acres adjoining the same which I also purchased of Saul Smith. -Item. I also give to my son, Reuben, one negro man names Moses, together with one horse and one feather bed and furniture, which he has received. 4TH. I give to my son, Edward Moore, one tract of land containing one hundred and sixty acres, more or less, lying on the waters of the Yadkin River in the County of Stokes, which I purchased of William Alfred; also, I give to my son, Edward Moore, one negro man named Jacob. -Item. I give to my son Edward, one mare, which he has received, and one feather bed and furniture, to him and his heirs forever. 5TH. I also give to my son, William, one negro man named Joe, also, one horse which he has received, and one feather bed and furniture, to him and his heirs forever. (To be Continued 14 Jun 97) RESEARCH HERB CUNNINGHAM (HerbCunnin@aol.com) *****Made a visit to Hubbard, TX to do research on my CUNNINGHAM lineage. The only records that exist for the "old section" are maintained by local funeral home and only consist of the name of the recorded plot owner. In my case, the only name they had recorded in the cemetery concerning the CUNNINGHAM family was Cab CUNNINGHAM; however, when visiting the site, there were a total nine graves with seven having the name CUNNINGHAM. The adjacent plot might be of interest to MOORE researchers having ancestors in northeast, central Texas. It had a monument to the TOBOLOWSKY family and contained the following graves: Top Row (left to right): Sam TOBOLOWSKY Oct 12, 1884 July 17, 1959 Jessie Jean TOBOLOWSKY Sept. 25, 1890 Jan 2, 1951 Center Row (left to right) Uncle Arch MOORE 1828 - 1910 Aunt Mary MOORE 1838 - 1902 Finis G. MOORE 1871 - 1915 Bottom Row (left to right): Sam MOORE 1820 - 1903 Jeff D. MOORE 1861 - 1937 Edwin Gray MOORE 1888 - 1931 Malcom Dodds MOORE 1887 - 1917 It is of possible interest that the CUNNINGHAM and TOBOLOWSKY family plots were adjacent to each other as both were reported to have owned and operated the local "dry goods" store at one time or another. __________________________________________________________________ Back issues of MOORE NEWS available at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/news __________________________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 15 January 1997
