With the exception of my Aunt Oda, I had not seen or heard of my Moore relatives for since WWII. In July 1996 I attended the 90th birthday celebration of my Aunt Oda Moore in Sulpher Springs, Texas. Four of my 10 Moore cousins were there. I discovered none of us knew any information about our Moore lineage. I decided to attempt to collect everything each of us knew, and put it all together into one document. The lineage of our paternal grandfather and grandmother is our objective. Here's the information I have on my paternal grandfather's family. William Robert Moore (b. 1818 NC) married Mariah Stewart (b. 1830 NC) on December 23, 1847 in Madison County, TN. Elizabeth [Shaw] Stewart (b. 1802 NC) was living with them in Madison Co, TN in 1850. A 1-year-old daughter was also a resident at the 1850 census We couldn't find either family on the 1840 TN census, perhaps both families were still in NC. I'm having a lot of trouble locating a connection in NC. This Moore family, left TN in 1851-52 and moved to Holly Springs, Marshall County, MS a distance of abt 60 miles. They raised a family of 12 children. in the Marshall/Tate County in Northern MS. William Robert (d. 1900) and Mariah [Stewart] Moore (d. 1903) are buried in the Tyro Baptish Church Cemetery in Tyro, Tate County, MS. Listed according to age, the children of William Robert and Mariah are : Mary Elizabeth; Thaddeus C.; Rowanna; Azallie; James Bright; Ella Gayle; Jasper (or Joseph) Newton; William Arthur; Robert Fenner (my grandfather); Mertie M.; Emma Omega; and Lonnie A. Marriage information of this Moore family: Ella G. Moore married Harris Lucius in Marshall Co. 27 Dec 1882 Mary Elizabeth married M. V. House in Marshall Co. 15 Feb 1871 Azallie married William M. Clinard in Marshall Co. 15 Jan 1874 Thaddeus C. married Isabella R. Owens in Marshall Co. 1 Feb 1877 Mertie M. married J.J.D. Hargis in Tate Co. 27 Dec 1886 James Bright married Ella Bolton in Tate Co 18 May 1884 Jasper (or Joseph) Newton married Mamie T. Green in Tate Co 20 Sep 1885 Roanna married a Miles William Arthur ? Robert Fenner married Ella Eugene Grant in Memphis 7 Aug 1895 Emma Omega married John Mercer Lonnie lived in New Orleans, LA and was preacher. I'm new at this research and want to learn better techniques and resources than I've found to this point. I'll share what I have. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MARYANN MOORE (Mneibarger@aol.com) *****I am MaryAnn Moore widow of Ernest F. Moore. I am doing research into my husbands ancestry. My own life story isn't particularly interesting, but those of many forbears are. My Moore connection comes from a maternal grandfather, Aaron Barkey Moore, born 21 Jul 1849 in PA, was orphaned at the age of 10 and went to Indiana township or county, PA, to live with an older brother. Both brothers went to Titusville abt this time when the oil boom started. Aaron B. married Margaret (Lil) Lafferty 1 Jul 1878, presumably in PA, worked as a clerk for the Tarbell Corporation in northwestern PA, and retired to LA where he died in 1926. According to family notes, Aaron Barkey Moore was the 12th child of William Moore (1 Mar 1807 - 12 Aug 1852, both events probably PA) and Mary Ann (Annie) Holsapple or Holtzapple (30 Mar 1806 - 28 Jun 1859, both events probably PA). William and Annie were married, again probably PA, 31 Aug 1830. I've been working principally in Massachusetts, and PA is truly a huge state. Does anyone find anything familiar about my Moore family? With 12 children, I would expect a migration west (OH? IN?) and perhaps south as well. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SAM REDDING (adi@abelink.com) *****My Moores go to Lynch Moore, probably the son of Lewis Moore, born in Kentucky, probably Madison County, about 1828. Lynch married Rebecca Bailey and moved to Platte County, MO and later to Kansas. I believe Lynch and Rebecca had about 10 kids, and one was Dolly Ann who married Thomas Gideon Gillihan and was my great grandmother. Thomas Gideon Gillihan's grandmother was named Lucinda and she married Thomas Gillihan, probably in Jackson County, TN (or a nearby county) about 1811. Lucinda may have been a Brown or a Bedford. We are trying to solve this mystery as researchers are in disagreement. If she was a Brown, she may have been the daughter of Hezekiah Brown who was from South Carolina. The Browns ended up in Polk County, Missouri, as did the Gillihans, about 1833. If any of this connects to you, please let me know. The Moores and Browns are two lines about which I have been able to discover little, primarily because they are such common names it is hard to sort them out. Thanks. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BARB ROBERTS (kenr@netins.net) *****Hi all, I'm new to the Moore News. My Moore line begins with George Moore/Elizabeth Lucas in Prince George Co. MD. She was b: 6/21/1823 in DE, d: 5/6/1896 in Bethel, DE: married Alexander Washington Hopkins 7/3/1848 in Sussex Co., DE. They had 4 sons that I am sure of, but may have had 2 other children. I received information by email from a query I had placed on the forum (computers are wonderful!!!!!) which gave me her mothers last name: William Moore and Tinsey (Tency) Penton and enough information that I feel sure they are the ones. Bethel was in Broadcreek Hundred and was called Lewisville before 1880. Other towns nearby were Laurel, Seaford (Nanticoke Hundred) DE and Sharptown, Md. Family names are Moore, Hopkins, Spicer, Beauchamp, Brewington, all from this area and the Salisbury area. Quillin was also involved in this area though I am not aware of any family connection. These people were all ship builders and seaman. If anyone has any information to share I would really appreciate it. At a little later date I will try to trace this Moore line forward for you. Thanks for the help and encouragement. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ELIZABETH ANN 'LIZ' GARY (webgarys@ghg.net) *****EI was born in Washington, DC, graduated from Western High School in Georgetown in 1963 and have worked most of my adult life with NASA at Goddard Space Flight Center, NASA Headquarters and Johnson Space Center. I have two children, both grown now, and one grandson who is 9 months old. I have been researching my achestors since 1974. My Moore line is on my maternal side and I have had a devil of a time finding any information about them. My mother, her sister and brother, knew very little about their family history so I have pretty much had to start at ground zero. The following is all of the information I have: John S. Moore (my GGrandfather) - b. 2/1850 - Phenix City, AL - no death date - m. Martha ? - b. 11/1844 - GA - no death date. If anyone has a connection I would be very interested in hearing from you. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - (kinneer@netset.com) *****I am looking for any information on descendants of Benjamin Moore (b. 1763, d. 1845) and Jane Bright (d. 1802) of Plump Hill, England. I have been able to trace down several generations but am looking for leads on Ellen Moore Watkins (b. 1845 d. Nov. 1926) and her sons John (1867-1938), Thomas (1869-1956), Alfred (1970-1905), Isaiah (1872-), Rowland (1874-1948), and Harry (1878-). Ellen and her sons emigrated to the US in 1886-87 and settled in the Houtzdale, Clearfield County, Pa. area. Later they moved to Tuscarawas County, Ohio. Amelia did not come to the US because of illness. Ellen was a widow at the time she came to the US and later married John Watkins. Ellen's husband, Thomas, was murdered in a mine near Plump Hill, England. Her son, Alfred, was killed in a coal mining accident in Barnhill, Oh., in 1905. Benjamin was also married to Sarah Pride and had one daughter Ann. Searching for information on Harry and Alfred and their descendants. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - LOIS MOORE ( lomor@ewol.com) *****Hello Everyone. I recently subscribed to the MOORE NEWS. My husband (Randall) and I have really enjoyed reading it, but so far we haven't been able to find any connections. My husband's gg grandfather, George H. Moore (b.1829 in Perry Co., AL; d.1908 in Fayette Co., AL). George H. was married to Melinda E. West (b. 1829; d. 1898 in Fayette Co., AL) and they had 7 children all born in Alabama: Monroe (b. 1852; d. unknown) James W. (b. 1854; d. 1932 in AL; m. Emma Sevella Reese) Allis S. (b. 1856; d. 1930 in Fayette Co., AL) Fannie J. (b. 1858; d. 1941 in Fayette Co., AL) John M. (b. 1861; died 1940 in Fayette Co., AL) Julius L. (b. 1865; d. 1944 in Fayette Co. AL; m. Annie L. White) Ida (b. 1868; d. 1945; m. last name Frank) If anyone out there knows anything about George H. Moore's parents and siblings we'd be so grateful. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - PAT DOYLE (PatDoyle@aol.com) *****James Moore was my great grandfather, but nothing is known about his line of the family. James Moore was born in Ireland, possibly Queens Co., about 1830's, was married in New Orleans in 1872. He married Mary Larkin of Co. Galway, and had two children Katie Moore and Thomas Joseph Moore. His son Thomas died at the age of 15. I feel sure James had brothers and sisters, and possibly his father was named Thomas Joseph. Does anyone have any of these names from Co. Queens Ireland in their research? Please e-mail me at PatDoyle@aol.com if you can help me connect James with any other Moore's from Queens Co. I am going to Ireland in September and hope to at least get a closer look at the area although I know that my research really needs to be done here. Thanks for any help you can give me. __________________________________________________________________ Back issues of MOORE NEWS available at: http://www.public.asu.edu/~moore/news __________________________________________________________________ MOORE NEWS: Compiled from email and other sources Distributed by Joyce Browning cJBrown7169@AOL.com 5 June 1997
