MOORE NEWS Volume II June 9, 1997 Issue 28 New Members NEW MEMBERS INTRODUCTIONS JACK MOORE (jmoore@texanet.net) *****Thanks for adding me to the Moore Family Study. My wife and I have been researching our families for 25 years and the Moore line has been the most difficult to follow. My great grandfather William Moore was born June 30, 1821 in TN and according to the 1850 DeKalb CO AL census his father was born in NC and his mother in TN. I believe William had a sister, Martha, who married James Parsons. William married Elizabeth Deaton March 29, 1842 and they appear in the 1850 DeKalb Co census and the 1860 Williamson Co IL census. Children were Belinda Surren born 1843, George Dallis born 1845, Skelton born 1848 (my direct line), Caroline born 1851, Nelson born 1852, Amanda Maze born 1854, Surelda Vistina born 1856, Lavonia Octavia born 1861, and Sarah Catherine born 1865. Other than Skelton we have very little information. We would certainly welcome information on any of these Moores, particularly William. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SHIRLEY MAYNARD (ShMaynard@aol.com) *****My grandpap said our Moores came from Scotland. Now, would a gramps lie to his little girl? Of course not, but he was mistaken. My Moores were Mohrs, German as they come. As soon as I realized that, the dam burst and now my cousins and I have accumulated tons of Moore material. I started researching decades ago but didn't realize it. My family called it pack ratting to save obits, letters, photos of unknown people, grad and wedding cards. With a smug grin I can say, "ha!" I had the nucleus of my Moore research so when I began actively searching for my roots and cousins, it wasn't as hard as it could have been. So to begin, I was born in a small coal mining town in southwestern PA, the daughter of a coal miner. Both grandfathers and four great grandfathers were miners, some in PA, some in Indian Territory OK, some in IN. I married a career Air Force enlisted man and we and our five children traveled quite a bit, living 3 years in Puerto Rico and 4 years in northern Italy, plus numerous 1 year stints in various sites here in the USA. Hubby retired from military 22 years ago and is fixing to retire from NASA as project manager next spring for a final (we hope) retirement. My great grandfather, Johannes Conrad Mohr/John C. Moore, traveled from Gangloff/Becherbach, Pfalz, Germany up the Rhine River to Amsterdam to board a boat to Philadelphia in 1807. [Birth records, Gangloff Evangelisch Lutheran Church, stored in Becherbach. Parents Daniel and Anna Marie Nagel Mohr, grandparents Peter Mohr and Johann Nikel Nagel. Original records and translation in my files.] His ship listing had "J. Conrad Mohr and 2 children." [Passenger Arrivals at the Port of Philadelphia 1800-1819, Ed. Michael H. Tepper. National Archives Passenger Lists film.] Absolutely nothing more. He was a youth of about 15 and his time of departure, I believe, showed he was running like hades to evade Napoleon's drafting of German cannon fodder. Not that he was a coward, by any means, for he voluntarily enlisted in his adopted country's War of 1812--the second war of independence from England--in 1814. {NA files. PA State Archives files.] He married Susannah Nagel, 2 Mar., 1823 in Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, Jonestown, Lebanon Co., PA. [IGI records. Typed copy of church records.] They had 9 children in Lebanon, Lebanon Co., PA. A brief run down on them: Magdalena "Margaret" A. Moore married James B. Brown, Westmoreland Co., PA. Benjamin More [sic] married Catherine Albert, Westmoreland Co., PA. Sarah Ann Moore married Peter Beck, Westmoreland Co., PA. William A. Moore married Charlotte Staples, Tazewell Co., IL. Mary Ann Moore married unknown Myers. Johanns Moore died as a youth. Samuel B. Moore married Anna B. Martin, Westmoreland Co., PA. Johan Conrad Moore, Jr. married Mary Busse Hill, Westmoreland Co., PA. Daniel Moore married Ruth Elizabeth Culver, Macon Co., IL. The family moved 1838 from Lebanon County, PA to Westmoreland Co., PA where John continued his coopering business with his now trained cooper sons. Born in Westmoreland County, PA were: Cornelius Moore married Mary Agnes Borland in Allegheny Co., PA. George Washington Moore married 1) Martha Martin, 2) Susan Warr/Harr, 3) Carrie Blackmer in 1) PA, 2) DeWitt Co., IL., 3) CT, but returned to IL. Alexander Lawrence Moore married Emma Harriet Barnhart in Prairie du Chien, WI. James B. Moore -- my great grandfather -- married 1) Celesta Martin, 2) Martha Martin Moore, [brother's abandoned wife], 3) Sarah Miller--no marriage, but child was born-- 4) my great grandmother, Elizabeth Salone Tombs/Tomes/Thoms, daughter of Solomon and Julian Tomes, granddaughter of Solomon Thoms. Joseph Moore, no information other than born 1848 in Latrobe, Westmoreland Co., PA. Eight of these sons and 1 grandson served in the northern army during the Civil War. I have all but one's pension records--Benjamin never received a pension for his militia duty. My great grandfather had 13 children. The next to last son of his last marriage was my grandfather, Harry Arthur Spelman Moore, who married Ida Mae Sholey, daughter of Charles Alexander and Mary Magdalen Bricker, granddaughter of Cyrus John and Sarah Agnes Hill Sholley [sic]. My mother was the oldest daughter and I am the oldest daughter in a family of 2. My father is 89 and still alert and active. I have 5 children, 9 and 3/9 grandchildren, and 3 great grandchildren. The family tree is progressing blessedly normal, old leaves are dropping while new leaves are budding. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MARY SEBRING (Hanlam@aol.com) *****I have just subscribed to Moore News and this is my first query. My Moore line starts with Samuel Preston Moore - this is all the info I have on Samuel. He was the father of Hannah R. Moore who was born in Wilmington, Delaware. She married Josias Hanson Adams II in 1813 at Clarksburg, Harrison Co., WV. She died in 1863 in Clarksburg, Harrison Co., WV. Any leads on this Moore line would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SALAAM BLACKMORE (blackmore@bluewin.ch) *****I have to confess that my knowledge, both of genealogy in general and of my ancestors in particular, is limited. For the last four generations we have been a London, England, family. Before that my father's ancestors came from Devon and my mother's from Suffolk. My mother's mother was Flora Moore, who was born and married in Kirkley, Lowestoft. Her father was Captain James Moore, born sometime between 1844 and 1846, who skippered and was reputed to have owned, a three-masted sailing ship, the Meda. At least two of the female members of the family were given the first name "Meda", but I don't yet know which came first, the ship or the girls! And, if I may share with you a tiny snippet of local colour, my mother sailed on this ship as a young girl and distinctly remembers that the crew addressed her grandfather, not as "Captain" or "Skipper", but as "Father"... Captain James' father was Robert Moore, also from Kirkley. He was probably born about 1820, but I have no other information about him apart from the fact that he was a shoemaker. Other Suffolk names I am interested in include Hurren, a small, but very ancient line, Tuttle(variant spellings)and Sceely. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - CLINT JOYCE (DClickSoft.aol.com) *****I suspect I may be connected to Moore line since so many of my Gibson relatives had the middle name of Moore. George Gibson was born 30 Dec 1763 in Guilford, North Carolina, soon after his father, arrived from Ireland. In 1791 he married Ann Knox, b 24 Dec 1764, Mecklenburg NC, daughter of John and Elizabeth Knox, in Guilford. Guilford was the scene of one of the major battles of the Revolutionary war. Their son was: (A) George Moore Gibson - b Sep 20 1790 in Guilford, North Carolina, died Lawrence County MO Dec 28, 1845. Some sources say that George Gibson b 1763 middle name was also Moore. The first circuit court was held at George White's house one mile west of Mount Vernon, MO, October 20, 1845, with Charles S. Yancy, presiding; Thomas Hash, clerk, and W. Smith, sheriff. The grand jury on this occasion was made up of seventeen members, viz.: John Williams, Dempsey Jackson, George W. Messick, John H. Colley, Daniel Ware, Andrew B. Woods, John Mahon, Matt. Lowder, George M. Gibson, Alfred Moore, John B. Woods, James M. White, Wade H. Stroud, Jacob Fisher, John Ingram, Robert Jennings and Absalom Williams. We wondered with Alfred Moore attending the meeting if he were related to George Moore Gibson in any way as so many of the Gibsons used Moore, Knox, Pickens and Wassons as their middle name, and we know those other families were united in marriage. Possibly the same situation might have prevailed with the Moore family. We subsequently learned that Alfred Moore's daughter, Martha Jane Moore, was married to George Moore Gibson's son, William Moore Gibson, but still do not know if they were related otherwise. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - SUZY LEE (SLinAZ3@aol.com) I am a newcomer to the Moore Newsletter and would appreciate your including my family information in hopes that someone out there will recognize this family. Your newsletter is great! Thanks. I am looking for any information on my great-grandfather's family. This is what I have: Unknown (possibly Archilles) Moore born ca 1790/1800 in AL; died 1829 married ca 1816/1818 in AL or TN to Elizabeth _?_, born ca 1800 in NC; died 1846 TX Children: 1. Mark H. Moore born ca 1818-1820 2. Eliza Jane Moore born ca 1822 in TN 3. Amos Vincent Moore born ca 1824 in Limestone Co, AL 4. Julia Ann Moore born ? 5. unknown daughter According to A.V.'s life story, he was born in Mooresville, AL. In 1827 his family moved to Nashville, TN, where he spent his childhood. His father died ca 1829. In June of 1839, Mark and A. V. arrived in Houston, TX. Elizabeth, their mother, and the girls either came with them, or arrived shortly thereafter. Elizabeth Moore married a second time on 27 Dec 1839 in Harris County, TX, to Major Isaiah Call. Family story says that Major Call was killed by Indians shortly after their marriage along with Julia Ann's husband. Elizabeth may have married a third time to a Mr. Holman, who was some type of governmental official, and moved to Austin, TX. She died ca 1846 in Texas. 1. Mark worked on one of the first newspapers in Houston, Texas. I believe he also worked for a paper in Nashville, TN, as a young printer from Nashville was staying with him in Houston. Mark never married. 2. A.V. settled in Lavaca County, Texas, in 1841, and remained there (except for fighting in the Mexican American War and the Civil War) until his death in 1904. He was married 13 Jan 1848 to Nancy Cardelia Carter in Sabine Parish, LA. Their children: Elizabeth N. Moore b 11 Dec 1848 LA, married Tol Robertson; Eliza Jane Moore b 28 Dec 1850 in Tx, married Doc Crabb; Julia Ann Moore b 20 May 1853, married Grant Woodward; Mark Anthony Moore b 1 Jan 1856 Tx, married Callie Garner; Mary Ann Moore b 17 June 1858 Tx, married Bocie Brown; Emma Ellen Moore b 3 Sept 1860 Tx, married E. M. Barrett; Rosa Drusilla Moore b 25 Arpil 1866 Tx, married Julius Roberson; Carrie Florence Moore b 8 Apr 1869 Tx, married E. J. Meitzen; Amie Virgilia Moore b 30 Jan 1871 Tx, married Wm Geisert; and Amos Vincent Carter Moore b 30 Mar 1875 Tx, married Nellie Jane Denton. 3. Eliza Jane was married 10 July 1845 to William R. Carter in Sabine Parish, LA, and spent her life there. Their children: Mary Carter born ca 1846 in LA and Redman Carter born 1849-50 in LA. There may have been more children. 4. Julia Ann married an unknown Shoemaker (who according to family history was killed by Indians at the same time as her mother's husband). May have had one daughter named Avis from this marriage. I would like to share family information with other descendants and possibly learn more about A. V.'s parents and siblings. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - BOB ROSELLI (roselli@vuse.vanderbilt.edu) Bob has sent comprehensive information on his two Moore families. Here's my bio: Born April 11, 1947 in Dallas, Dallas Co., TX. My husband is Joseph Donald Hudspeth and we have twin sons, John Eric and Jason Matthew. We are now living in Grand Rapids, MI. I've been interested in genealogy for about four years. My dad had researched his family beginning in the 1940's. He gave me all his material, and I became hooked! I have the following Moore line in my family: Sarah (Sally) Moore, b. Jan. 8 1775 --- d. Oct. 20, 1835 in AL m. Richard Crowson (1770-1826) on June 14, 1813 in Madison Co., AL Their children: Martha, Margaret H., and Richard, who became a Methodist minister. Martha m. Ephraim Hill. Margaret H. m. Asa A. Supposedly, Harriett died first and Ben remarried. Then when Ben died soon after, his wife wanted the children, but neither they nor relatives wanted her to have them. Harriett died traveling from her original home (not sure if OK or AR) to visit her brother around Tulsa area. Other Moore or Chasteen relatives may be Sarah who m.
