MOORE NEWS Volume II June 11, 1997 Issue 29 SALUTATIONS Editor's Note: One of our subscribers suggested that MOORE NEWS be emailed by a new method that doesn't give you a whole page of addresses which are pretty useless. For some reason, I haven't been able to find her message, but she checked out the technology I tested it on several people and found it works, SO . . . . in the future, MOORE NEWS will be mailed to you as a 'blind copy.' You will see only your address following the letters 'bcc:' Don't panic, you didn't suddenly become a solitary subscriber with blinders on. Hopefully, this will make it easier for you to get to the opening lines. Thanks so much for helping us with this, my friend. I think everyone will be pleased with the improvement. - - - - - - - - - - - - - Here's a good reality check for Rooters. I thought it was so amazing to see how easy it was to be born a Virginian, I'm using it for our opener today along with that little bit of Virginia doggerel that is so insufferably smug, it's amusing: SANDY SANFORD (GOLFOGEY@aol.com) ***** These are a few tidbits I've found here and there during my 15 years working on genealogy. The area around Pembroke and Lubec, Maine, was populated often by those from Nova Scotia or New Brunswick. He was married to a Margaret Harris who was born at sea. Their child Ellen married an Ackley from Lubec. - - - - - - - - - - - - - KEN (KWT1149@aol.com) ***** I keep hoping to make a connection sometime to my Moore line.....problem is, I know so little about that line, it is hard to find any info that sort of fits. I am in search of information on Mary Etta Moore, born in 1835 (location unknown) and married Joel Jones, who was born in 1828. Have lots of info on Jones, nothing on Moore, except that her father was William Moore, her mother was Marsha Stanton. Mary Etta and Joel Jones had eight children between the years 1853 and 1864. One was born in Nebraska and the last in Iowa. Their names are: Flora L. Jones, Watson L. Jones, Drinda D. Jones, Sylvia Elizabeth Jones, Mary A. Moore, Born Aug. 22, 1852 and Died Oct.4, 1904. Spouse America Johnson, Born 1857. Siblings are Julie, Jim, Mellissa, Mary Jane. She thinks John's father was Isaac or William, Spouse Polly. RESPONSES DAVID HOBBS (Dcornet@aol.com) Always nice to know the system works! *****I just wanted to thank you for running my query again. DON MOORE (Donm8@aol.com) kindly responded and I think I now have somewhere to go with my Asberry MOORE. It seems that from MS he moved back to GA, if indeed this is the right Asberry. There are several other Asberry Moore's in GA at that time but only one fits the age requirement (b. abt 1820; he was 47 on the 1870 Census for GA). There were no Asberry Moore's to be found in MS or AL after 1860. So thanks for giving me a place to start! I appreciate your help! - - - - - - - - - - - - - MILDRED PRATHER (mprather@mail.coin.missouri.edu) It worked again! ***** In a recent issue SAM REDDING (adi@abelink.com) inquired about "Lynch Moore, probably the son of Lewis Moore, born in Kentucky, probably Madison County, about 1828." Could hardly believe my eyes when I saw the Lynch Moore query! Lynch was the great grandfather of my husband, Elvin (recently deceased), and I have have been been stymied on that family line for years. Looks as if you have gotten about as far as I have. This is a summary of what I know of these Moores: Lewis Moore, b. 1792 KY, and Polly (1m. Joel Smith) married 1824 in Madison Co. KY, are parents of Lynch Moore and an unknown daughter who married a Wren. Lynch Moore, b. 1828, married ca 1850 in Madison Co., KY to Rebecca Bailey. She was b. in Madison Co, also in 1828. We always thought Rebecca's name was Bailey, but have learned that she was brought up by her Grandmother Wells and apparently there is some confusion about which name she used; we also know that she had an uncle Henry Wells or Bailey. Lynch died 1906, Coffey Co. KS. Rebecca died 1913, Johnson Co. KS. Lynch and Rebecca Moore moved to Platte Co. MO about 1853/4. The first of their children, John Nathan, was born in Madison Co. KY, and the others all born Platte Co. MO. The children were: John Nathan Moore, b. ca 1853, d. CO Mary Ann (Polly) Moore, b. 1854, m. Thomas Maxie/Maxey in Platte Co. MO. Samuel B. Moore b. ca 1857. William Richard Moore, b. 1859, d. 1911 Johnson Co. KS, m. Elizabeth Emma Munson. Lizzie Moore, b. 1860. Sarah Ann Moore, b. 1861, m. James Talley. Cyrus MOORE, b. 1863, m. Mary Tonroy in CO, d. 1936 OK. Dolly Ann Moore, b. 1865, m. Thomas Gillihan, d. 1934, Johnson Co. KS. James Moore, b. 1871. In addition to raising their own family, Lynch and Rebecca also raised three of his sister's children -- Jim, Tom and Lewis Wren -- and a granddaughter, Gertie Maxey Black. My husband's mother was Nellie Mae Moore, daughter of William and Elizabeth Emma Munson Moore. There is a reunion of this family in Ottawa, Kansas July 20, 1997. JACK MOORE (Jacknbetty) *****The Old MOORE Newsletter has struck again! I reported some time in the past that I had Moores coming at me from three different directions. Of course, my GG Grandfather was Harvey. His son Thomas married an Ellen Moore. My wife's Mother is also a Moore. My query in the newsletter brought a response from Kathryn Mutchler-Lee. We made a connection when I mentioned a couple of the names. Now, I have another key to the families. turns out, my wife Betty and I share the same second cousin: Lewis Earl Moore. RESEARCH NICK ARENDS (arendsn@ext.missouri.edu) Nick very kindly sent this information about Morgan and A. A. Moore even though it's not his line. The Editor responded to him with some information found in Lower Norfolk about an earlier Morgan Moore. We both hope someone will benefit from this conversation. Heads up if you have IL or OH ancestors. *****I have information on A.A. Moore, the son of Morgan Moore who moved from Virginia to Ohio in last century. Morgan was a soldier from the War of 1812. RESEARCH GERRE BYRD (GGENGARD@worldnet.att.net) *****I came across a WILLIAM MOORE, Clarke Co., GA Will Book "B", 1822-1842. I have not seen the actual document. I don't know who this might help, but thought it might help someone looking for a William Moore. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - TOM POWELL (TOM PWYL@aol.com) Date: 2 1997 10:35 AM EDT *****With Church Conference, yard work, etc.I am behind in most everything, but I wanted to get this note of thanks to both of you for your help and to say that Jean, [loving wife of almost 52 years] and I will be going north to a grandnephew's wedding, and thence to Durham and Mt. Tirzah N. C. While there, we intend to get some photos of the Moore homeplace. As you probably know it passed to the Reade famiy, and eventually to my Mothers Uncle, William Franklin Reade. The last time we were there it was occupied by a rather distant cousin who was quite old, I don't remember if I have sent the following to you if so forgive me but I would like to fill in a little with regard the Moore side of my family that you have now. So that you will understand, I am a 72 year old retired Air Force Lt. Col., youngest son of Rufus Heflin Powell Jr. and Elizabeth Bailey Reade Powell who has fallen heir to the genealogy started by my Grandfather Rufus Heflin Powell, Sr. in 1944 and continued by my Father. My Grandmother, maternal, was Mary B Moore [1864-1906], daughter of George Moore [1837-1916] and Bettie A. Bailey [1838-1917]. At the time of her Mother's death, Elizabeth Bailey Reade, [1893-1950] was thirteen years old. As she was an only child, arrangements were made for Cornelia Moore Powell [I'm not sure of her dates and will get from Mt. Tirzah.] to live with my mother and her father, Joeseph Gardner Reade, [1861-1950]. Eventually Papa Joe and Aunt Nell were married and the two lived on a life estate interest provided by his elder brother, William Franklin Reade, until Aunt Nell's death when Papa Joe came to Durham to live with Mother and Dad. A side note. Cornelia Moore Powell [Aunt Nell] was the daughter of Benjamine Iredell Powell and his second wife Ella Moore. He was Bother to my paternal Grandfather who started this genealogy. Another side note. My Paternal Grandparents lived in Durham, N. C. Directly across the street lived Eugene Walter Reade, brother of Papa Joe [Mt Tirzah]. Next door, on the east side of Uncle Walter, lived Thomas Allen and his wife Lizzie S. Moore, daughter of George G Moore and Bettie A. Bailey. Directly across the street from them , and next door on the east of my paternal grandparents, lived William M. Speed and his wife Lizzie Moore Speed, sister of Aunt Nell. who were daughters of Ella Moore and Benjamine Iredell Powell. Unfortunately it was not always one big happy family as Granddaddy Powell, for reasons that I do not know did not appreciate Will Speed as a neighbor. I hope that this has brought some interest to you of a small part of our common ancestry. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - EILEEN CUPPOLA (E5jc6@aol.com) *****I've been browsing the Virginia Library for Moore links and came across some early marriages with Moore surname.
