MOORE NEWS Volume II June 25, 1997 Issue 31-Part B (Coninued from No. 31-Part A) LEE DONOVAN (ljdonovan@aol.com) *****Here is a listing of the Capt. John Moore Cemetery I found in the "Western Pennsylvania Genealogical Society Quarterly" vol. 10 #2 Nov. 1983. The information was abstracted by Bryon F. King and Helen G. Trotter. They both get my warmest thanks for all the information I derive from their research. "This old cemetery is located approximately one mile west of Fairbank, PA. off Township Road #378 (usually called the Fairbank-Lamberton Road) in Redbank Twp., Fayette Co. It is situated near the town of New Salem which is in Menallen Twp. The cemetery was originally located in the center of the Captain John Moore tract of several hundred tomahawked acres , and was kept not only for the Moore family, but for surrounding neighbors. A fence surrounds this burial plot, and the lot is badly overgrown with sumac." In Memory of In Loving Memory of Aaron Moore Jr. Capt. MOORE MISCELLANY PAUL PHIPPS (PaulPhipps@aol.com) *****The Subject of this message came is after I read the latest Issue of Moore News. You make me want to be part of the John Moore heritage. Thanks for a great piece of history. Who knows, maybe my Aquilla will be one of the descendants of John. In regards to Aquilla, someone asked me via email, where the name Aquilla originated. I had no idea, but went to the Unabridged Dictionary, which is always open on a book shelf. In the back of the dictionary, is a section on Foreign Words and Phrases. There was a phrase, "Aquilla non capit muscas", which in Latin translates to, "An eagle does not catch flies". I think without stretching it too much, Aquilla means eagle. ha As long as I'm sending this, I'd like to relate a Moore event that happened to me, while on my recent trip to Johnson County in the northeast corner of Tennessee. Johnson County TN borders Ashe County, NC. If you remember, I have been able to establish that Aquilla had a son, Rev. Robert Preston Moore, my g grandfather. This is a story about Robert. This story is part of my Story File, so all I have to do is copy and paste. Here it is. MOTHER'S DAY 1997 Before I left on my trip in May 1997 to TN, my 9th cousin, once removed, Paula Rouse, of Vancouver, WA, suggested I go to a church service in TN. Her reason for this suggestion was because her cousin, Tim Rouse, is a minister in a particular church in TN. That church is the Free Will Baptist Church in Friendship. Friendship is a community near Bristol, TN near Sharp's Creek. That church also happens to be where my g grandfather, Rev. Robert P. Moore was minister during the period of about 1860-1910. A large picture of Robert & his wife, Louisa (Blevins) Moore hangs in that church. I was in TN from Sunday, 4 May to Sunday, 18 May. The only chance I had to go to church was Sunday, 11 May. That day happened to be Mother's Day. I was staying at my cousin, Wilbie (Roark) Bentley's, home in Shady Valley, TN, and knew that Wilbie's daughter, Joanne, and her husband, Walter, were coming for dinner, so I decided that should be their get together, without me. Therefore, I decided to go to church. I got to the church about 15 minutes early for the service. I asked one of the people outside the church when church started; they said at 11:00 AM, but I could go in any time. I went in and sat down. A person came over and welcomed me, as he knew I was a stranger. I asked him, who Emery Rouse was, and he said, the man at the pulpit reading the Bible was Emery. When Emery was through, I walked up and introduced myself. I had talked on the phone to Emery a couple of years earlier about the Rouse family, but had never met him in person. He remembered me, and really welcomed me. While we were talking, I asked him who Warren Rouse was and he told me he is the man leading the singing on stage. This was a very relaxed crowd, and a lot of talking was going on, so I wasn't out of place. ha Then I got to meet Tim Rouse, who was the minister. Tim and I had corresponded by email, so we knew of each other. Then Tim introduced me to his parents who happened to be sitting behind me. It was Mother's Day, so the whole service was about that. They asked for the youngest and oldest mothers there. The youngest was 24 and the oldest 68. They gave flowers to all the mothers. Then Tim introduced me to the congregation, and told them I was going to tell them, who the people were in the picture that had been hanging on the wall for over 100 years. I, of course, did that, and told them a couple of stories about Robert & Louisa. They really seemed to enjoy what I had to say. I got flowers too, even though I wasn't a mother. :-) The services were concluded, and Tim's parents asked me if I would like to join them for dinner. I accepted with no hesitation. ha Tim's dad rode with me to their house, so I wouldn't get lost. I had a swell dinner, and met a lot more Rouses. I took many pictures. My day finally ended, and I left with fond memories of the folks in Shady Valley, Tennessee. I had a memorable day on Mother's Day in 1997 in a Church in TN. COMING NEXT WEEK 1.
