This measure/procedure is described in more detail in Kintigh et al. 2004. Kintigh, Keith W., Donna M. Glowacki and Deborah L. Huntley 2004 Long-term Settlement History and the Emergence of Towns in the Zuni Area. American Antiquity 69(3):432-456. HOW TO USE IT ------------- To use this program, simply set the slider "start_date" for the beginning of the time period considered (the current version is set up for years AD, but could be easly modified for other date ranges). Next, set each of the sliders "e_date" 1-10 to the transitions between your periods. For example, in the default setting, the first three intervals date from AD 850-900, 900-950, and 950-1050. Next, for the variables "room_acc" 1-10 use the sliders to set the number of rooms/people assigned to each interval defined above. If you wish to use fewer than the default 10 time periods, use the pull down menu "number-of-periods" to assign the correct number of intervals. If you, for example, set "number-of-periods" to 7, the program will automatically ignore the sliders for the last 3 time periods. Finally, set the slider for "occupation_length" to the estimated average length of room occupation (or alternatively life span of an individual). This variable is used to calculate the rooms/people per unit time which is plotted in the upper panel. Once all of the sliders are set, simply click "Setup" to run the program.
