ASU AFRICAN DRUM ENSEMBLE
The African Drum Ensemble was created in 1988 to explore the drumming practices found in West Africa, primarily Sénégal, Guinea, Ghana, and Nigeria.   This ensemble has also participated in workshops with Yoruba performers from Nigeria and Cuba.

The director, Dr. Mark Sunkett has been studying the music of West Africa, primarily from Senegal , Mali, Guienea, Ghana, and Nigeria and is an active scholar in the field.   Several drum families can be found in each country which provide a wide variety of folklore and rhythms.  The ensemble is open to all students, music majors and non music majors.  Dr. Sunkett has for the past three been director of the "Drums of Sénégal Project." His continueing research in drum making, and rhythms of the major ethnic groups from Senegal has been the source of the music you will hear today.
