DISSERTATION RESEARCH

Navajo Sandstone

The Navajo Sandstone is a Jurassic eolian sandstone that is part of the Glen Canyon Group. This group consists of the Wingate Sandstone, Kayenta Formation, and Navajo Sandstone. The Navajo Sandstone intertongues with the Kayenta Formation below, and is truncated in most areas by the regional J-2 unconformity at the top. My Ph.D. work was focused on the terrestrial paleoecology of interdune deposits in the Navajo Sandstone, in the vicinity of Moab, Utah. There are hundreds of interdune deposits near Moab, ranging from simple limestone lenses to massive cherts, with a continuous series between.

My project was based on a combination of field work and laboratory components. The first papers resulting from this study will be submitted for publication in early 2009.
