ACADEMIC RESEARCH

LATEST RESEARCH

This takes you to a detailed summary of my most recent project, my doctoral thesis, which is entitled Converting Conflict: Lumad Mindanao in the First Mission Period.

The project itself grew out of the questions raised by my earlier M.A. field research into ethnic identity and conflict in the Higaunon Lumad areas of north Mindanao (Region 10) in the Philippines. It is an ethnohistorical study that required several years of development and extended background research, including archival research in several collections in Spain and the United States.

The 2004-2005 portion of the project, which included travel to Spanish archives to consult primary sources, was made possible by generous support of the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, with supplemental grants from the Escuela de Estudios Hispanoamericanos in Spain, the Newberry Library in Chicago, and the Vatican Film Library at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. The earlier development portion of the project was supported financially and institutionally for three years by the graduate research fellowship program of the U.S. National Science Foundation.
