Click on the titles below for samples from my stint as senior staff writer for the Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs. The position was a short-term contract in an office with severe budget and personnel restrictions, but I remain affiliated with them post-contract on an as needed basis. The "lite" items listed below were for an online newsletter that had lain dormant for a year. Please note that I had nothing to do with the layout of the webpage or the newsletter format itself.
Pieces I wrote
under my by-line:
Pieces attributed to other people but which I re-wrote almost entirely as editor:
My longer format articles are for an in-house magazine that is awaiting budgetary decisions. I will post them when they are released, but if you would like to see a sample now, just send me an email.
Below are the most importnt projects I completed as editor while ISNAR was still a stand-alone CGIAR center based in Den Haag (it has since been reorganized under IFPRI). It was my first professional endeavour after having the baby, so it was fitting that I replaced the regular editor while she was on maternity leave. After the contract was over, I did additional work for ISNAR on a freelance basis.
Copy Editing (1999-2000) for ISNAR, Institute of Social Studies (ISS), and historian Peter Schreurs MSC, Netherlands.
Freelance Writing (1990-1993) for Hawaii Filipino Chronicle in Honolulu, Hawaii.
Managed contributions in fiction from all over the Pacific and continental United States; worked with incarcerated writers affiliated with local creative writing projects; cleared three-year editorial backlog during my tenure.
THE SHELL ECONOMIST PRIZE (2002)
Winner of Third Place Bronze Award for essay in reponse to question "Should we trade our freedome for our security?"
Read the essay, entitled CHOOSING ILLUSIONS, here.
POETRY
My poetry has been published in the Philippine Graphic (Manila) , I've also self-published a collection of early poems, Of Men and Angels (Honolulu:Transient Fish, 1990) . In the early 1990s I did live readings of my own work at Club Dredd (Metro Manila, Philippines), Our Back Porch evenings at the Coffeeline (Honolulu, Hawaii), and a special appearance at an annual Peace and Justice Week Festival event at Andrews Amphitheater, University of Hawaii at Manoa.
