Greetings. My name is Olaf Zielke and this is my --recently renovated-- website. As you may realize,
this site is mainly addressing my professional life. I am a research scientist at the
King Abdullah University of
Science and Technology, KAUST in Thuwal, Saudi Arabia. I am working in
Prof. P. M. Mai's research
group in the Division of Physcial Sciences and Engineering, more specifically in the
Earth Science and Engineering program.
Overall, my research revolves of earthquake rupture and I am approaching this topic from a number of different angles.
My research here at KAUST is largely concerned with kinematic earthquake rupture models, derived from seismic source inversions that utilize a range of data sets from real
earthquakes to resolve respective fault slip history and final slip distribution along the activated rupture plane. Kinematic rupture models reflect on the underlying parameters
and processes, involved in the rupture process and therefore provide valuable information to better understand the earthquake source. Additionally, I am working on forward-models
to simulate multi-cycle earthquake rupture sequences, aiming to identify individual parameters and processes (as well as their interdependencies) that dominate earthquake
recurrence characteristics. Another field of research I am involved in is tectonic geomorphology and paleoseismology, aiming to extract evidence for surface rupturing earthquakes from geomorphic
and stratigraphic record respectively to constrain slip accumulation patterns and earthquake recurrence statistics. More detailed descriptions of those topics may be found in
research section of my site.
Aside from research, I am showing off a few panorama pictures that I took over the years and a number of links that I find useful.
I hope your visit of this site will be of some interest to you and your own work. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions regarding the site
and its content.
