Cub History

The Chicago Cubs are one of the founding fathers of professional baseball and the National League. The franchise has played since 1876 and since 1914 have played their home games in Wrigley Field.

They consistantly draw over a million, and at times over two million, fans to Wrigley Field.

Playoff Record And Interesting Facts

The Cubs have a World Series record of 2 wins, 8 losses. Their last World Series appearance was in 1945 in which they fell to the Detroit Tigers in seven games, 4-3. Their last World Series Championship was in 1908, or 90 years ago. To put that in perspective, since 1908:

1. Radio was invented.
2. Four states have been admitted to the Union.
3. Two atomic bombs were dropped.
4. Television was invented.
5. The Great Depression.
6. The US participated in two world wars, and four major armed conflicts.
7. The NFL was founded.
8. Man landed on the moon.
9. Harry Carey was born and died.
10. Wrigley Field was built, then became the oldest park in the NL.
11. Lights were installed at all the other baseball stadiums, before Wrigley Field.
12. Ten teams have been added to the major leagues.
13. Halley's comet passed twice.
14. Communism was born, resulted in a Cold War, the Berlin Wall and the eventually demise of.
15. A space station was developed, built and has orbited the Earth millions of times.
16. A robotic lander has traveled the surface of Mars.
17. The Titanic was built, sank, was found and tourists can now visit the wreck.
18. Computers and the internet were invented.

Since the inception of the League Championship Series in 1969, the Cubs have appreared three times. In 1984 the Cubs were defeated in five games by the San Diego Padres. The Cubs won the first two games, then dropped the next three. The Cubs held leads into the late innings of all three of the losses. The highlight of Game 5 was a ground ball misplayed by first baseman Leon Durham, which allowed the Padres to e lead and eventually the series. In 1989, the Cubs faced the San Fransisco Giants. They were out hit, out pitched and out played by the Giants and they fell in five games, 4-1. 1998 was another banner year in the playoffs for our Cubbies. After winning a 1 game playoff with the San Fransisco Giants, the Cubs were swept in three straight by the Braves. They were out scored 15-4, out played, out managed and just plain out classed. In 1998 before the series even started the Atlanta media called the Cubs "a sure bye" for the Braves. The way the Cubbies played in the three games, their prediction was correct. The drought will continue.

Harry Carry 1920-1998 Hall Of Fame Broadcaster. Harry Caray was one of the best in the business. He passed away 2-19-1998 after a fall in a nightclub.

The 1969 Team. Forget 1984 and 1989. The 1969 Cubs were the best Cub team that I have ever watched play. On August 14, they led St.Louis by 8 1/2 games and the New York Mets by 9 1/2. Something happened along the way to a division title. By August 27, their lead was only 2 games. September was a worse nightmare. The Mets posted a 23-7 record, while the Cubbies struggled to a record of 8-17. The Mets went on to win the World Series and the 1969 Cubs will forever be known as "The Chokers". A popular joke was: Wrigley is moving the Cubs to the Philippines. They will be now known as the Manila Folders.

The 1906 Chicago Cubs The Chicago cubs sets the all-time major league record for wins in a season (116) and sets the major league record for winning percentage (.763) since 1900, en route to their first pennant of the 20th century. The only all-Chicago World Series is played; the White Sox win four games to two.
