Welcome to Peter J. Wegner’s Website

I am a Faculty Associate and PhD student in Rhetoric at Arizona State University’s Department of English. My interests focus on text-based rhetorical/linguistic analysis, as well as visualization of text and the influences of visuals on language use. I have also been teaching writing (in several different capacities) for the last five years.

My dissertation topic will focus on multi-modal texts. I believe that many industrialized societies are moving toward greater use of multi-modal texts for the transference of knowledge, ideas, and culture. Multi-modal texts include the use of color, imagery, motion, shape, design, sound, and font and are prevalent on the web as well as in computerized documents.

I feel that much greater study must be dedicated to understanding the effects of multi-modal texts on meaning. Rhetorically speaking, we must understand how the delivery and audience’s experience of the message is just as important as the content of the message itself.

To help us understand the growing field of Visual Rhetoric I have gathered a list of links to sites. Enjoy!
