Wednesday, July 7: Wyoming and the Jill

previous back to tri-points home next

Heading on out of the Bridger-Teton Forest, south toward Kemmerer, the inevitable happened: I was pulled over. Along narrow quiet WY 233, a green Cherokee with red and blue lights tracked me down after I was cruising along at about 80mph. Turns out luck was on my side, because this was a game warden checking to see why I'd turned around a few miles back, where he was hanging out in his truck. I could honestly say that I'd turned around to take a photograph, but he was suspicious and wanted to check my car. He sent me on my way, amazingly, and I told him to have a nice day.

So off I went, to my first time commitment of the trip: I needed to get to Casper to pick up my pal Jill from the airport by 12:30pm. Jill would be arriving to accompany me on some tri-point adventures and, perhaps more importantly, to show me the Cosmos Mystery Area in Rapid City.

No big deal - the drive across the countryside of Wyoming was sunny, wide open, and quick. As it turned out, I closely followed the Oregon Trail, following pioneer routes through such interesting spots as South Pass, where many of the pioneers crossed the continental divide, Inscription Rock, a large rock dome with thousands of pioneer's initials and names from the 19th century, and Devil's Gate, a strange short canyon through the end of a range near Casper.

Amazingly, about 300 miles of driving later, I arrived at the colossal Casper Intracontinental Airport almost exactly at 12:30 to find the Jill.

We ate at a perfectly greasy spoon in Casper and proceeded east toward Lusk, where I was to find the owner of the property we needed to cross to get to our next destination: the Wyoming-South Dakota-Nebraska tri-point.
