Sunday, June 13, 2004: The faint road and the long trip through Utah

The dogs and I found the tracks passable on foot and walked with the GPS north and west. The Unita Mountains glistened with their snowpacks to the southwest. The air was fresh, cool, and breezy, and the wildflowers were all around me at my feet – I think the most prominent one was the vibrant cobalt larkspur, but I’m just trying to match up with my field guide, and I could be way off. We walked for about 1 mile and three tall brown poles came into view – this was it. We got to a fence, which I determined delineated the UT-CO line, and walked up to the three poles – flag poles, as it turns out, with no flags flying on this day. Unlike the popular and accessible NE-CO-KS tri-point, this one was way out there; I can’t imagine anyone having visited here in many months. There was a large sign on the Utah side, erected by the Kiwanis and Boy Scouts from back in Craig.
