Friday, June 4, 2004: The Oklahoma panhandle trifecta

Black mesa, highest point in Oklahoma

Traveling north away from the tri-point brought me back to US 56/64. I crossed the highway and traveled on paved but lonely and unmarked roads to the tiny town of Kenton, OK, at the base of Black Mesa, the highest point in Oklahoma, in the extreme northwest corner of the panhandle. Just east of Kenton, a paved road (signed Black Mesa State Park) took me north around the mesa. The road follows the North Branch of Carrizo Creek. The pavement ends at a cool white metal sign welcoming you to Baca County, CO, but to get to the CO-OK-NM tri-point, you’ll need to bear to the left (west) at this sign. I poked along this good gravel road for about a mile and, looking for the monument, found a bit of a distraction, particularly for my dogs
