Oboe Repertoire MUP 451/551

Survey of Orchestral Excerpts

Spring Semester, 2009

Martin Schuring (E-443). Class meetings in E-277. Fridays 3:05 to 5:00

This class is a survey of orchestral literature for the oboe and the English horn. Grades will be determined on a week-by-week basis – based partly on your class participation and partly on the quality of your preparation and performances. At the end of the semester, there will be a mock audition with the excerpts listed below. This will count for 25% of your grade. I will invite a guest adjudicator.

Mock audition repertoire:

Mozart Concerto - exposition 1st movt.

Ravel - Tombeau de Couperin. 1st movt. beginning to #2, #8 to #9.

Rossini - La Scala di Seta. Slow and fast solos.

Strauss - Don Juan. Letter L to 17 after Letter M.

Preparation for each excerpt assigned:

¥           Study the score.

¥           Read about the composer and his music.

¥           Listen to three recordings, more if available.

¥           Learn the excerpt(s) and perform them in class.

In class:

¥           Bring the score (with extra copies for the others, if possible). Also, copies of the part, if possible. It is not necessary for everyone in the class to have a copy they can keep, but it is helpful if everyone has something they can refer to while you speak.

¥           Bring a recording of the piece. If you cannot find a suitable recording in the music library (or in your library), please let me know. I can bring something from home if I have notice.

¥           Briefly describe the historical context of the piece and its composer.

¥           Perform the excerpt(s) and discuss both individual and ensemble difÞculties.

General:

¥           For the larger works please learn the whole part, but prepare only the standard solos for the class. Part of your preparation will be to determine which excerpts are the most important. Ask me if not sure.

¥           All excerpts are 1st oboe unless noted.

¥           To purchase music, I recommend Eble Music at 319/338-0313. Try not to use excerpt books. Or, visit http://www.orchmusiclibrary.com/products_listing.php?list_type=instrument&id=2. These are very useful resources. If each class participant buys one CD, we can have a nearly complete library.

¥           This is a survey of excerpts with representative examples of music selected. There are many more excerpts to learn, many of them quite important. We cannot study every Beethoven Symphony or every Strauss tone poem, but you should.

Excerpts will be assigned on a weekly basis, in the following (mostly) chronological order.
