The modern oboe has folk and sacred counterparts everywhere. Virtuoso oboist Brenda Schuman-Post displays and demonstrates her collection of shawms (oboes) from Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, Africa, and Europe. With audio
recordings of authentic performances by indigenous musicians, she explores the ceremonial role of the oboe in world culture, its connection to nature, and its imagery in art and literature. She illustrates how the style of playing these instruments can influence and enhance modern oboe technique and music.

Might-Have-Been Bassoons: Reform Instruments by Boehm & Kruspe

Carl Almenraeder's reforms of the 1820s have hardly been superseded to this day. However, important efforts continued to be made to improve what was usually considered to be an instrument inferior in most technical and acoustical respects to the other woodwinds. The most significant of these were carried out in the 1850s and 1890s. Theobald Boehm's design, built in
Paris by Frédéric Triébert and Angelo Marzoli, was exhibited there in 1855. The 'Reform-Fagott' by Friedrich Kruspe of Erfurt, who had earlier trained under both Boehm and Triébert was patented in 1892. An example of each of these rare models will be discussed and demonstrated.

"Great Oboes of the Twentieth Century"
A lecture demonstration exploring the design and acoustics of great oboes owned by famous players of our time. By using today's medical technology such as radiographs and MRI scans, we are able to analyze and document the internal structure of the oboe.

Starting with the oboe of Marcel Tabuteau, we look at the intricate construction, bore profile, tone hole shapes and sizes, and bell perturbations. We will also trace the oboe's evolutionary design improvements and the repairmen and oboists responsible for those innovations

Loon music that honks and hooks.
Devils dearest. Pipe of skunk
and mushroom, Mozart and moan.
Skinny silver-and-black balloon
Blow it up. Classy Funk
goes pop. Tuxedos that chortle
and cavort. Traditional punk.
Oxymoronic sport. Who's crying?
Like a doctor cutting open
a snake. Or an achy swollen
infected spine. Or a stiff whip.
Or moon tubing. Or a quick wind
that croons rueful thirteens.
