PREREQUISITES: MAT 270 (Calculus I) or its equivalent with a grade of C or better.
TEXTBOOK: Calculus, by Hughes-Hallet, Gleason, et al.
GRADING: 25%:
Homework & Projects, and Computer Labs (200 pts)
50%: Four in-class tests (400 pts)
25%: Final Exam (200 pts)
GRADING SCALE: A = 90
to 100% B = 80 to 89% C = 70 to 79%
D = 60 to 69% F = 0 to 59%
CALCULATORS: A graphing
calculator is recommended (TI-82, TI-83, and Casio 9800.)
You may use the TI-92 or laptop
computers on your tests. Some tests may require technology but others,
including the final exam, will be technology-free.
SOFTWARE:We will have an introduction to MAPLE, a commercial computer algebra system. (You are not free to copy it. A student version is available for purchase at the university bookstore.) MAPLE can also be accessed from both Macs and Pcs at any of the campus computing sites.
MASTERY TESTS: There will be mastery tests on techniques of differentiation and integration. These are pass/fail tests; you must pass with a minimum score of 80% to pass this course. You will be given a specific list of techniques covered by the tests, and will be allowed two tries to pass it. These exams will be taken the Testing Center, PSA 21
COURSE POLICIES:
Students are responsible for assigned material whether or not it is
covered in class. Students are responsible
for material covered in class whether or not it is in the text. Working
regularly on assigned problems and attending class are essential to survival.
Homework will be collected on Thursdays
at the beginning of the class. No late HW will be accepted. Homework problems
are listed below (but possible changes will be announced in class). 3 to
5 of them (chosen by me) will be corrected. Make-up exams are at
the discretion of the instructor. In any case, no make-up exam will be
given unless the student has notified the instructor before the test is
given. Message may be left in my office, at the main office (965-3951)
or through email. You must make every reasonable effort to notify me before
the exam is given and document your reason for missing the exam.
