The Problems Submitted by Ramanujan
to the Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society

Abstract
Between the years 1911 and 1919 Ramanujan submitted a total of 58 problems
to the  Journal of the Indian Mathematical Society. The publication of Ramanujan's
Collected Papers in 1927 brought Ramanujan's problems to a wider mathematical
audience. Several problems have since become quite famous and have attracted
the attention of many mathematicians. Some problems have spawned a plethora of
papers, many containing generalizations or analogues. A few problems remain open.
It thus seems appropriate to provide a survey of all 58 problems indicating  the activity
generated by the problems since 1927.

Ramanujan's Notebooks

Abstract
Ramanujan was born in southern India in 1887 and died there in 1920 at the
age of 32.  He had only one year of college, but his mathematical discoveries,
made mostly in isolation and recorded primarily in notebooks without proofs,
have made him one of this century's most influential mathematicians.
A brief account of Ramanujan's life will be given.  Next, a history and
general description of his notebooks will be presented.  Lastly, we offer a
selection  of some of the many fascinating entries found in the notebooks.
