History of the ASU Survey Research Laboratory

The ASU Survey Research Laboratory was founded in 1972 by Professor Morris Axelrod in the Department of Sociology; he directed it until his retirement in 1987. The SRL collected data by phone, mail, in-person and over the web for faculty members; federal, state, and local government agencies; foundations; and the ASU administration. A two-semester graduate course sequence in survey research methods, the Practicum in Survey Research, was offered through the SRL from 1972-2003. The graduate students assisted in the planning, development, and conduct of funded surveys with access to the data for analysis and the preparation of research papers and reports.

Shapard Wolf worked at the ASU Survey Research Laboratory from 1983-2004; he served as director and taught the Practicum from 1987-2004.

You can see what the old SRL home page looked like here. The SRL was transferred out of the Sociology Department with the name changed and a somewhat different mission. Persons desiring access to or information about the archival data collected by the SRL should contact the ASU Institute for Social Science Research.

On 21 October 2004, Shap was transferred to the ASU School of Life Sciences, where he currently works as a Technology Support Analyst, Principal.

IBM Laptops

IBM laptops have a very secure bios password. If the CMOS chip loses power, you can get corruption in this chip and not be able to log in. IBM's answer is to replace the motherboard. There is a way to read the contents of the security chip and decode the stored password; if the eeprom has been corrupted it can be repaired and rewritten. See the website at allservice.ro. Here are some pictures of how I built the circuit described on the site.
