Dr. Shelley E. Haydel: Biography
Dr. Shelley E. Haydel is an Associate Professor in the School of Life Sciences and a Researcher in the Center for Infectious Diseases and Vaccinology at the Biodesign Institute at Arizona State University. She was born and raised in New Orleans, LA and obtained a B.S. in Microbiology from Louisiana Tech University. After working as a Laboratory Scientist at the Louisiana Department of Public Health Division of Laboratory Services, she initiated her graduate studies at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she earned a Ph.D. in Microbiology.
Her postdoctoral studies were performed in the Department of Biology at Washington University in St. Louis, where she studied mechanisms of two-component system regulation in Mycobacterium tuberculosis. During her tenure at Washington University, she was also an Instructor in the University College and taught Molecular Microbiology and Pathogenesis in the M.A. in Biology program. In 2005, she became a faculty member in the ASU School of Life Sciences and the Biodesign Institute.
Dr. Haydel’s research interests are focused on the regulation and function of M. tuberculosis two-component systems, the role of these systems in mycobacterial virulence, and host-pathogen interactions, at the molecular level. Her laboratory combines genetic and biochemical approaches to study the molecular mechanisms of these regulatory systems and cell culture and animal models to investigate the role of these systems in the M. tuberculosis disease process. Dr. Haydel is also interested in understanding the physicochemical properties of antibacterial clay minerals and the microbiological mechanism(s) by which clay minerals promote bactericidal and/or bacteriostatic activity.
