Failure to comply: State agencies, universities ignore energy-reduction law

Back in 2003, lawmakers passed a law that required state agencies and universities to reduce their energy consumption by 10 percent by the end of 2008. The legislation had overwhelming bipartisan support, and it was intended as a way for the state to set an example for local governments to make their buildings more eco-friendly.
The intentions may have been noble, but the results were disappointing. None of the energy standards were met by the deadline, and the Board of Regents, responsible for the state's three universities, remains noncompliant. Read full story (PDF)

Ethnic studies were first brought to Superintendent Tom Horne's attention in April 2006 when civil rights activist Dolores Huerta said "Republicans hate Latinos" while speaking at an assembly at a Tucson high school.
After the incident, Horne said he was asked to ban controversial speakers. Instead, he made sure the students would hear both sides of the issue. Read full story

"What I did in the military made me strong enough to do what I'm doing today," U.S. Army veteran John Tuzzolino said.
Tuzzolino, 39, of Ahwatukee Foothills, was paralyzed while assigned to a Ranger training battalion in 1991. After two years of service and almost two decades later; he is participating in weightlifting competitions across the country. Read full story

The federal ban on flavored cigarettes that went into effect last week has forced Tempe smoke shops to remove certain stock from their shelves.
The Food and Drug Administration ban was passed to reduce the number of people who start smoking at an early age then transition into smoking more dangerous tobacco products, according to the FDA Web site. Read full story
AIDS walk draws 175 ASU supporters

AIDS Walk 2009 brought more than 2,000 participants to downtown Phoenix Sunday morning, including about 175 people who walked with teams from ASU.
Participants at the walk, which serves to raise public awareness and advocacy for HIV and AIDS, raised over $320,000 to be equally donated to 16 different HIV and AIDS agencies, said volunteer co-chairs Debbie Rubenstrunk and Kirk Baxter. Read full story

The Ahwatukee Local Explorer (ALEX) is considered by many to be a great asset to the community, however, some riders and operators feel that this free service provided by Phoenix Public Transit is being constantly abused by Ahwatukee Foothills' younger residents.
After school lets out during the week, a flood of middle and high school students empties into the ALEX buses and reportedly act belligerent, swear and discuss rude sexual acts, according to riders and drivers. Read full story
