Bermuda Research Cruise

Jessica Amacher and Amy Hansen traveled to Bermuda in February 2009 to participate in one of the monthly research cruises to the Bermuda Atlantic Time Series (BATS) station as part of the Sargasso Sea project.

Stormy weather in the Atlantic and engine trouble on the RV Atlantic Explorer delayed the cruise departure for several days. This delay, while unfortunate, gave Amy and Jessica time to explore the island and to catch up with the research scientists at BIOS, the Bermuda Institute for Ocean Sciences.

When they eventually left aboard the RV Atlantic Explorer, Jessica and Amy were able to spend a few days working at the BATS station in the Sargasso Sea in good weather. During this time at sea they collected water samples, net casts and material from sediment traps. This work is part of our ongoing NSF funded project in which we are using molecular tools to study the contribution of the phytoplankton community to the downward particle flux (see main research page).
