Can cancer be prevented?
There is no sure way to prevent cancer since it can be linked to things such as heredity or the environment, or it may occur for an unknown reason. This is why every case is different. However, there are certain things a person can do in order to live a healthy lifestyle and this includes being informed about cancer and how to detect it early on. Researchers at Cornell University are investigating ways in which women can reduce their risk of breast cancer by adopting behaviors such as eating fruits and whole grains and by regularly exercising. Also, staying away from cancer causing agents, such as ultraviolet rays from the sun, radiation from x-rays and pesticides, can help minimize a woman's risk. It is thought that there is a correlation between getting breast cancer and having a high lifetime exposure to the hormone estrogen. Estrogen is a natural hormone in women's bodies, which rises once menarche begins. Height, weight, exercise, diet and family history all influence age at menarche. Therefore it is advisable that women eat healthily and exercise regularly throughout their lives since factors such as height and family history cannot be changed. |

Exercise has been proven to help since studies show it lowers a woman's estrogen, boosts her immune system and lowers her insulin levels by decreasing her weight. By living a healthy lifestyle and encouraging their daughters to take the same path, women can have a better chance at decreasing their risk of getting breast cancer. |
