Samantha Shomaker was born and raised in Denver, CO. After graduating high school,
she left for Tempe, AZ to attend Arizona State University and study journalism and mass communications. Her grandfather also went to ASU, which is what presuaded her to apply, and she received a Dean's Scholarship that enabled her to choose and out-of-state school. She is a student in Barrett, the Honors College and as a result is in a four-year combined Bachelor's/Master's program. She is currently preparing to finish up her sophomore year.
Samantha grew up in Littleton, CO and went to Arapahoe High School. She was very active, participating in numerous sports an organizations though her focus was on swimming. She swam from the age of seven and was a varsity athlete for three years. Her event specialty was the 500-yard freestyle, although she also enjoyed the butterfly. She also played lacrosse all four years of high school and was involved with quite a few clubs, including National Honor Society, Key Club and Community Service Just 'Cause.
Upon her arrival at ASU, Samantha was unsure of what path she wanted to pursue. She had chosen journalism as her major because she enjoyed writing and recognized her ability as a public speaker. However, when she began her classes and learned about the more well-known journalism specializations she realized that neither print nor broadcasting was something she would want to make a career of. She had not heard of the public relations major before, but decided it sounded like something she would be interested in doing.
Luckily, she was right on target. As she discovered more about this field, Samantha realized how much it could encompass her wide array of interests. Public relations could allow her to become involved in community service, music, entertainment, sports and even fashion. It also provides a creative outlet and combins the two reasons she chose journalism in the first place: writing and talking.
However, Samantha felt that there was some material missing from her course work. While she learned extensively about the journalistic and writing skills necessary to succeed, she did not feel secure with the business side of PR. She holds a firm belief that good business sense is necessary for any major or career, and wanted to gain knowledge in this area.
In order to do so, Samantha joined Alpha Kappa Psi the second semester of her sophomore year. This is a professional co-ed business fraternity that allowed her to make friends, attain a head for business and become active within her community.
As she embarks upon her professional career, Samantha is excited to learn and become more involved with the areas she has developed a passion for over the years.
