ENG 310 Intermediate Creative Writing Fiction

The class content was interesting.

I appreciated the feedback that came in our workshop groups.

It helped me try new things in my writing and also to discover new contemporary authors that I might not have ever read otherwise.

I learned a lot about writing. My technique and voice have improved. I feel better prepared to enter the world of writing and become a successful writer.

I appreciated Blackboard and the ability of the professor to reply promptly to any questions either through Blackboard or via email.

I was very impressed at how smoothly this online class was run versus my previous online classes. It was very enjoyable and I learned quite a bit despite not being in a class room.

She ran the class very smoothly and I think it was better run than any of my previous online classes. I loved it!

Instructor interaction was wonderful. Lectures were interesting and insightful.

Trish was great. She was super understanding of any problems that arose throughout the semester and provided great feedback. She definitely communicated with is frequently through emails mostly. She clearly knows a lot about the subject which not a lot of teachers in the creative writing program do.

ENG 210: Introduction to Creative Writing Fiction

The interaction with other students was very beneficial to me throughout the semester because their feedback allowed me to see how other people interpret my stories as well as areas that I need to focus on.

I gained a lot of very beneficial knowledge about a subject that has always interested me. It has always been something I have wanted to improve and the course helped me initiate this process.

I liked the textbook chosen.

It was valuable for me because the instructor provided a place where I felt safe and confident about sharing my writing. Feedback was informative and helped guide my writing.

The most valuable pat of the course to me was the workshops. I was able to get feedback and find out what I was doing wrong.

The instructor was very well organized online and I found the course to be intellectually stimulating.

Trish was extremely encouraging and responsive through the entirety of the semester. Even though she was teaching a million other classes I still felt like she tried connecting with her students from the very beginning of the semester which is something that I really appreciate. She was very clear in what she expected of us throughout the semester and was completely fair with grading. I did not feel that she taught the course just to earn a paycheck but because she actually loves what she does. Her willingness to help each student learn and achieve new personal goals was very inspiring. I felt like this course actually pushed me to become a better writer versus other classes that I have to take because they are required.

She was friendly and helpful; there was a good rapport between student and instructor.

I think she does a great job providing the reading assignments that relate directly to the concepts we are learning. The course is very well organized and I found that I learned a great deal.

ENG 411: Advanced Creative Writing Poetry

The course was set up very well which made it a lot easier to learn.

I enjoyed being able to express myself creatively and receiving constructive criticism to help me improve.

I appreciated timely workshop responses from my peers and the podcast notes from my professor. Those two components contributed to the success of my final portfolio.

She's recommended by many people and I see why. Easy to reach for questions and discussion.

Trish obviously knows a lot about contemporary poetry and she showed that enthusiasm and expertise in her responses to our work. This workshop was more intense than my previous workshops and I enjoyed that challenge.

I have taken every course I can with Professor Murphy and I just think that she is an excellent instructor. She's very good at what she does and I know that she knows what she is talking about.

ENH 370: Art of the Personal Essay

The instructor was readily available, personal and thoughtful. She made taking this course interesting and challenging. She put a lot of effort into her workshop comments.

ENG 394 Special Topics: Writing about Cats and Dogs

I really appreciated the valuable feedback I received from my peers and my instructors.

I learned to appreciate writing and poetry.

Writing papers and poems and getting feedback from other students and the teacher immediately was great. It was faster grading and comments on all of my work than I have ever received in an on campus course. I would definately continue taking online classes because I feel the instructor feedback and student interaction is at a much higher level than other courses.

This was my fourth class with Trish and I'm already registered for another.

She was helpful and very accessable. Her video instructionals at the beginning of the class were very helpful and greatly appreciated.

This is already my second class with Professor Murphy and I am signed up to take yet another class with her in the fall. She is a great professor. She sets up her class in a way that keeps the students on taks and on target for completion and she is adamant about peer editing while also giving her own edits ton our papers.

ENG 210 Introduction to Creative Writing Poetry

I really enjoyed the class and the instructor made it fun to learn.

I liked that we had deadlines but we could log into class at our own convenience.

This course has given me a lot more confidence in writing and learning about poetry by myself. I now have the tools to teach myself and I realize the importance of peer feedback in writing.

I learned the key elements to writing effective poetry.

I would not change anything about the course.

The instructor was very helpful and has great assignments and incorporated various communication techniques in which the students and the instructor interacted.

She had a clear outline of required work which made it easy to stay on top of things. I am taking another internet course with her in the fall.

I could write a novel about how valuable this course was to me. Without a doubt the most important class I have taken in my college career. Writing is everything to me and this class helped me open up new doors for myself and my writing. Trish is by far the most amazing writing instructor I have ever had the pleasure of studying under.

This is the third class I have taken with Trish and I have already registered for 2 more. She is so brilliant and passionate and educated when it comes to the topic and she offers something to everyone. She is compassionate and helpful to her students. She takes the time to respond to email and questions and becomes totally involved throughout the semester and she offers so much growth in my writing. She really makes you believe in yourself and I will carry that with me always.

I was able to get back into poetry. I've been out if it sometime and generally am not a fan. But I managed to get back no problem.

Professor Murphy is one of the most interesting and understanding professors I've had to date. I've already taken her for two classes and wouldn't hesitate to take another.

The way that my writing has improved is incredible. I never expected this kind of an outcome from what I thought was going to be an easy online course.

This is the perfect class to have online. Because it is a writing class the written format works well. The textbooks for this course were among the best I've ever had.

I think the Instructor was most valuable. She set a positive tone for the class which can make an enormous difference either way.

The texts were amazing and they actually helped me and were very readable. I also valued the teacher and student feedback. I think that is what has helped me the most as a writer.

I loved reading the stories. I was exposed to a lot more literature and it was one textbook that I actually enjoyed reading.

I liked the structure of things. The assignments helped a lot to soak up all the information. I really enjoyed it!

ENG 335 American Poetry

The most valuable thing about this course was the discussion board. The ability to get almost instantaneous feedback was very helpful.

The most valuable thing about this course was utilizing computer skills to complete an online class, and learning about American Poetry without the face to face interaction with the instructor and peers. I am a visual learner and by taking this course I gained knowledge and skills using a different learning style.

The most valuable thing about this course was interacting with the instructor as well as other students to get their thoughts and compare with your own. It opens up new windows of thought.

There was a lot of work crammed into a five week course, however the teacher did a great job explaining things.

The instructor was very helpful and seemed to care about me as a person.

She was incredibly helpful and available for all the students. She immediately emailed me because she heard it was my first online course; she was checking to see that I was moving along and completing the course successfully.

I was extremely impressed by how quickly the instructor responded to our online work. It was immediate! She also gave support to our responses.

She responds thoughtfully and quickly to assignments and gives individual attention.

From my experience so far at ASU it is not often that you get a teacher that is helpful and approachable. 9 times out of 10 I have had teachers who love to hear the sound of their own voice and are too pompous to actually help. This teacher was not like that at all.

She had great criticism and knew the form of poetry and fiction well.

I liked her.

The feedback and her grading were very in sync.

Trish is awesome. She knows what she's doing, is great at it, cares about it, and is genuinely passionate about improving the writing and research skills of her students. I enjoyed this course very much.

All workshops and writing assignments were very helpful and useful since they encompassed the final assignment. Excellent class! Very challenging but not overwhelming. Expectations very clear. Feedback from assignments supportive and helpful.

Prof Murphy is amazing! I will certainly recommend her to my friends. She responds to questions and classwork quickly and thoroughly. In addition, she is always willing to help out however she can.

The most meaningful items derived from this course are the knowledge and confidence given to me by Prof Murphy to compose creative non-fictional works that reflect not only myself but the world. The writing practicals and reading assignments greatly enhanced my comprehension of the course material. I believe that I achieved all the course goals with a special emphasis on learning and applying the foundational elements of the creative non-fiction genre. I really enjoyed the intensity of this course and it really re-instilled my interest in writing again. Prof. Murphy was outstanding throughout the course and answered questions from students in a speedy but thorough manner. She produced positive constructive criticism in reference to written homework assignments that made a better writer and student. I would definitely recommend this course to others.

ENG 301
I feel I have a better sense of what the "real world" is like, associated with the field I want to go into--marketing. The course was beneficial to me. Each discussion was related to the paper assignments, which were most useful because they were "hands on" in that we had to choose a career and focus in on that for the entire course. Each paper assignment was completed in different phases. It showed me how to gradually build a paper based on completing an outline, compiling research, using peer reviews, and creating multiple drafts. Thank you!

Even though this class was online the professor made it clear that she was always available for help. She would respond quickly to emails or questions which is always a plus. I enjoyed having Professor Murphy and would recommend her to friends.

I am now very familiar with searching the ASU library and other online sources for information. All of the assignments contributed to my learning. They all tied together and I think without any of them the class would have been difficult to understand. Trish was extremely helpful with her comments and always kept the class informed of what we were doing. Also, she strongly encouraged peer review which I thought was extremely beneficial to my work.

The Instructor was very good at getting us to analyze things and figure out if they are scholarly. I think that I achieved all of the course goals because she gave us good feedback. She was very quick at grading and got our papers back to us the next day. I really think that she put as much into this as she asked from us.

Prof Murphy taught me a technique of writing papers that was new and useful to my style of studying. Weekly activities were insightful and useful to the larger projects. Learning how to write a paper in stages was a very important lesson I had been hoping to learn, and am glad I did.

I think it was helpful to have weekly journals. It made me put more thought and consideration into the topics I chose to write on. I was unsure about what an internet course would have to offer; how the course would be run, how effective the teaching would be and how involved the professor would be. Trish is by far the most enthusiastic prof I've had since attending ASU. She is knowledgeable and her enthusiasm and support for the students is felt even though the class never meets with her in person. Additionally, she was very prompt with answering emails and grading work, which was not the case in other courses I have taken. I'd recommend this course to anyone and would love to have Trish again as a prof.

I am now able to write a strong argumentative essay.

ENG 210 Introduction to Creative Writing Poetry

As a technical writer, I found my creative skills seriously lacking. Because of this course, I was able to get back to the foundations of creative writing and practice those skills I have not used in many years. This course also gave me strong foundations for future creative writing courses. All the reading, writing and peer reviews were helpful. The class helped me to know that I still had the capability to write creatively. The Instructor was excellent and clear, organized, and encouraged peer review. I really would take another class with this Instructor and I believe that a class like this is essential to anyone interested in writing, no matter what level. As a graduate student, I was very satisfied in the manner of delivery, the assignments, and what I got out of this course. I got more out of this course, as a refresher, than some of the core classes I was required to take for my Master's degree.

It made me a better writer in general and I had fun doing it. Great job! I loved this class, I'll miss it!!

I feel like my writing style has improved, and I am more careful about adding details and creating a scene when writing. I liked when we had to put our character in different situations and think about what they would do in them. I would never have thought to do this, but my character was far more developed because of it. I think I overall enjoyed the course and learned a lot about creative writing. Trish was amazing. She got back to every email I sent to her and I really learned a lot from her.

Prof. Murphy is an amazing teacher. She responds thoughtfully to all students' works, and is always willing to help. I will recommend her to my friends and try to take additional classes with her.

She is wonderful, kind, generous, and yet very astute in her ability to pinpoint areas that need work.

This instructor is obviously very knowledgeable in her subject area. I appreciated her honesty regarding critiques.

Professor Murphy went out of her way to keep the class on task. She was direct in her communications to the students, which helped in understanding the course work. She worked to keep people in the course that were on the edge of dropping. Is is great to see University level professors take an interest in the students' welfare, it does not happen very often. The class was an excellent opportunity to gain knowledge and the skills needed in today's working environments.

Prof Murphy is an excellent Instructor. She explains what is required for each paper which is very helpful. I would definitely recommend her to other students and I will.

Prof Murphy's class is a wonderful experience. All of the little assignments link into the main assignment, and everything ties together. The only caution I would heed with this class is that internet courses are harder in the regard that students must know what is going on. You have to know which board to post your work on, and learn where the assignment guidelines are. Even so, Prof Murphy is almost always available via email, and ENG 301 is a good class to take if you have a tight schedule.

This is my second class with Trish. She is a great Instructor and treats us fairly, the papers are interesting and meeting online is great. I would highly recommend Trish to my friends.

Professor Murphy told me in one of my papers that I would be a great editorial writer. I never looked at the way I write in that light which I feel has made me have a better understanding for my own work. This class was excellent and if there are any other opportunities to take another course with her I will.
