Although the earthquakes are scatterred over a wide region there seems to be both a weak linear trend from NW to SE as well as smaller clusters of earthquakes at N44.75 W-110.9, N44.25 W-110.8 and N44.5 W-110.35. The linear trend may show the general path of the hotspot, or may reflect fractures or pre-existing weaknesses in the crust that are being exploited by the volcanic system. The clusters of earthquakes are probably earthquake swarms, or brief periods of increased magmatic or hydrothermal activity. These earthquake clusters may correspond to the years of increased seismic activity seen in the histogram (Years 1973, 1975 and 2008). Overall, the histogram shows that there is a general low level of background seismicity with periods of increased earthquake activity.
