Mall/MU exercise (9/29/2000), 8 points

In groups of five to six, go to the MU or to a local mall and answer the following questions. Chose 2 tasks (as a group)from the list below.

Each participant should write his or her own responses on one copy of the form. Discuss your answers as a group, and take notes summarizing your group’s answers.  Please relate your group’s results to the book (chapter on gender). Turn in all individual sheets with the report for the group (2 paragraphs/1 page, typed, all names listed with last 4 digits of SS#). Due Monday, Oct. 2nd in class. No late turn-ins!

TASK ONE: Go to the video arcade.
1.   Are the games marketed primarily for males or females? How can you tell?

TASK TWO: Go to a store that sells greeting cards and note the following:
1.   Compare birthday cards for boys/sons/fathers with cards for girls/daughters/mothers. What colors are used for "male" cards? How are males portrayed?
 
 
 

2. What colors are used for "female" cards? How are females portrayed?
 
 
 

3.  Compare girl baby cards with boy baby cards, in terms of colors and roles.
 
 
 

TASK THREE (@ the Mall): At a toy store (e.g., KayBee Toys in Fiesta Mall) note the following:
1.   Are the dolls marketed primarily to girls or boys? How can you tell?
 
 

2.   Are the guns marketed primarily to boys or girls? How can you tell?
 
 

3.   What color packaging is used most often used for the dolls? for the guns?
 
 

4.   What personality characteristics and roles are promoted in the marketing for the dolls?
 
 

5.  What personality characteristics and roles are promoted in the marketing for the guns?

TASK FOUR: Go to a store that sells CDs.
1.   Spend about five or ten minutes looking at the compact disk covers.  In general, how are men portrayed? How are women portrayed?
