COURSE POLICIES

Course literature:
Most readings for this course are available online. For recommended hypertext editions, please use the links from the Syllabus. The drama by August Strindberg, Miss Julie, is not available online, but copies of the book will be supplied free, courtesy of the Swedish Cultural Institute. A few remaining texts will be available in a course reader, at cost.

Grading:
2 brief critical papers (#1 5-7 pages, #2 7-10 pages). Pick a topic from the topics list which will appear on the website at least two weeks before the critical papers are due. You may send your papers to me as attachments to email. You are responsible for completing the reading by the date we will be discussing it. Brief quizzes on each of the readings will be given. In addition, each individual must post at least one response to student questions on BlackBoard (MyASU) each week and 6 questions over the course of the semester. Regular attendance and vigorous contributions to class discussions (on and off-line) are part of your grade. Here is the breakdown of your final grade:

Critical paper #1 10%
Critical paper #2 20%
Attendance, BlackBoard participation,
class discussion 20%
Quizzes 10%
Oral presentation 15%
Final Exam 25%
Total 100%

Attendance & Participation:
Because so much of your learning will take place in class, you must attend on a regular basis to receive credit for this course. If you miss more than 6 class meetings (including on-line meetings), your grade will be dropped one letter grade, regardless of your performance in the class.
Attendance means being present, on time, and prepared for the entire class period. A student who is chronically late to class, leaves early, or is not prepared to participate in the day's work will not receive attendance and participation credit. I expect you to attend all class meetings and miss class only in rare and unavoidable circumstances. Should you arrive for class after I have called the roll, it is your responsibility to ensure that I correct the roll at the end of that class. Failure to attend class may also affect the grade given to you on the weekly reading quizzes, an important part of your grade, as it is carried out in class and may not be made up.

Late Paper Policy:
Papers turned in late will be dropped ½ grade every 2 days until turned in, starting the day after the paper is due.

E-mail & Course Website:
All class participants must have an email account, provided free of charge to all ASU students. If you do not yet have an e-mail account, self-subscription stations are available in Computing Commons. E-mail will make it easier for you to get in touch with me and with other students during the semester. Important announcements and instructions will be sent out by e-mail. It is your responsibility that your instructor is always kept up to date on your current address, whether or not you use ASU e-mail or an independent provider.

A course website featuring on-line versions of most documents distributed in class, a full and updated version of the course syllabus, and many other useful resources is available at http://www.public.asu.edu/~cajsa/edrama/
I encourage you to visit the website at least twice a week.
