Growth Habit: Evergreen, herbaceous perennial (cool season annual in Phoenix) that grows from rhizomatous tubers, small and basally clumping growing to 10 to 12 inches tall, plants go dormant after flowering.

Foliage/Texture: Leaves are medium green, with basal leaves being biternate, otherwise leaves are deeply divided to pinntified; medium fine texture.

Flowers & Fruits: Solitary, showy, poppy-like, single flowers to 2.5 inches in diameter, each with 6 to 8 tepals (unclassified as either a sepal or petal, flowers on single, delicate stems rising to 10 to 12 inches tall. Flower tepals are bluish violet, red, pink, or white (sometimes both red and white) with black centers, fruits inconspicuous.

Seasonal Color: Flowers in later winter and spring.

Temperature: Cardinal temperature range between 35oF and 85oF means that poppy anemone is treated as a cool season annual in Phoenix.

Additional comments: This is a nice diminuative mesic garden border accent plant with multiple flower colors. Several cultivars have double flower arrangements in colors of white, white blush, rose pink, and orange are now commercially available.
