101 Homework Policies
ONLINE HOMEWORK
All homework (HW) problems will be found on your WebAssign
Website. There will be approximately 550 possible online
HW points; a score of 500 or more will be counted as 100%.
A score of less than 500 will count as a percentage of 500.
This percentage on the online problems will be weighted as
10% of your overall 101 grade.
Deadlines for the online problems will be found at the
WebAssign website and on our Homework Schedule.
Using online HW-answer services (such as Chegg.com) to
find answers for our HW problems is not allowed. Any
students found using such services for one of our HW's
will automatically receive a ZERO for that HW. Repeated
incidents will result in an E as an overall letter grade
for our course.
WRITTEN HOMEWORK
In addition, there will be nine of the online problems
that you ALSO must write up and turn in, either by
attending your recitation in person, or in pdf form, at
Canvas. You MUST follow the procedure given in lecture
for these written problems. The specific problems and
due dates will appear with the instructions on your
WebAssign website; the due dates are also available on
our Homework Schedule. These written problems will be
graded by your TA and the TA's grading will appear at
Canvas with 1-2 weeks of your pdf submission, or else
will be returned to you at your next recitation meeting.
The written HW problems are due, either in person or on
Canvas, at the beginning of the relevant recitation
meetings. If you attend in person, place your written
HW on the front table of the recitation room as you
enter. Submissions marked late at Canvas WILL NOT BE
GRADED. For this reason, if you are submitting at Canvas,
be sure to submit well before the deadline. The lowest
of your nine written HW grades will automatically be
dropped at the end of the semester.
It is your responsibility to submit a pdf file that is
readable at Canvas. If the file that you have submitted
is NOT readable at Canvas, then you will receive a ZERO
for that written HW; there is no relief provided. Be
sure to use the Practice Upload assignment available from
our main PHY101 Canvas webpage to practice submitting a
readable file. Thanks, GBA.
Written HW's will be graded out of 20 points. Your
written HW average will count as 5% of your overall
101 grade.
For working on homework, study groups are strongly
encouraged; however, in the end it is your responsibility
to write your own answer to all written homeworks. Any
written homeworks which have obviously been copied will
not receive any credit; such cases may be sent to the
dean for further sanctions.
LATE POLICY
Written HW's submitted after the deadline (and thus
marked as late by Canvas) will not be graded. Be sure to
submit your work well before the deadline. The HW
submission page at Canvas will be available at the ending
time of your recitation for the previous week. Your TA
will not accept HW turn-ins after the deadline has passed.
HOMEWORK GRADING APPEALS
Written HW's will be graded by your TA. If you wish to
appeal the grading of one of your HW's, you must follow
these procedures:
(1) First discuss the grading of the HW with your TA, at
their office hours, within one week of receiving your
graded HW at Canvas. If the problem cannot be resolved
by this discussion, then follow the steps below:
(2) If you think you deserve more points on a graded HW,
submit an appeal IN WRITING. Explain carefully exactly
why you deserve more points, and ask for as many points
as you think your answer deserves.
(3) Send your written appeal, in PDF form, to Dr. Adams by
email within two school days of your discussion with
your TA.
(4) I will discuss the HW with your TA, and with the other
TA's. What I demand of the TA's is relative uniformity
in HW grading (everyone should get the same treatment,
as far as is possible). We make take no action, in
which case I will write a reply to your appeal. Or we
may recall those HW's as graded by your TA for regrading.
