Dr. Stephen K. Batalden | ![]() |
Professor Batalden (Ph.D., University of Minnesota) is a specialist on the religious and cultural history of modern Russia and the Balkans.   He teaches courses on the history of Russia, Eastern Europe, and the Balkans.   He is coordinator of the ASU Russian and East European Studies Consortium, and also directs the university's academic exchange with the University of Sts. Kiril and Metodij (Skopje, Macedonia).   Dr. Batalden has authored and edited several volumes on Russia and Eastern Europe.   His research has been supported by extensive travel in Eurasia, funded in part by grants from the International Research and Exchanges Board (IREX) and four Fulbright fellowships.   He is currently engaged in research projects on the politics of modern biblical translation in Russia and on religious property restitution in the Balkans.   A friend and mentor to many undergraduate and graduate students, Batalden received the Distinguished Teaching Award in 1988 from the Arizona State University College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
