Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes

1)      Take a look at the reviews posted for the Bronx Masquerade on this website.  Do you agree or disagree with what they have to say?  Write a paragraph of your own reviewing the Bronx Masquerade.

2)      Choose one or two poems from the current month's online poetry journal.  What did you think of the poem/poems?  Give at least two examples of aspects of the poem/poems that you liked, and two questions you have after reading the poem/poems.

3)      Give a brief summary of what you have learned about the Harlem Renaissance.  Choose one of the authors mentioned in the summary, and explore the link to that author.  What did you think of his/her work?

4)      Choose two of the poems here created by high school students that you enjoyed.  What about these poems spoke to you?  What did you like about them?  What didn't you understand?  Is there anything you would like to know more about after reading these poems?

5)      The students in the Bronx Masquerade wrote about many important issues in their lives.  After reading the article about the Knicks' Poetry Slam, do you feel that the kids who participated in this activity wrote about similar issues?  If you were to write slam poetry of your own, what would you write about?

6)      As you can tell, Langston Hughes made many accomplishments throughout his lifetime.  Early on, Wesley writes a poem about the author.  What aspects of his life do you think were inspiring to Wesley?  Do you think they share any similarities? If so, what?

7)      Two of the students in the Bronx Masquerade were dealing with issues concerning teen pregnancy.  One was a teen mother, and the other desperately wanted to be.  Based on the knowledge you got from reading about this issue, which character do you feel you relate to most?  Why?  What issues do you think teen parents face?

8)      In the beginning of the Bronx Masquerade, one of the student's talks about dating violence.  What constitutes dating violence?  What are some of the signs that may indicate a friend or loved one is being abused?  What do you feel would be the right thing for this character to have done?  What would you have done if you were in the same situation?
