The Sisterhood
of the Traveling Pants by
Ann Brashares is a book about the lives of
four teenage girls. Bridget, Carmen, Tibby, and Lena call themselves the
Septembers. Their moms were best friends during pregnancy so they were all
born in September and grew up together, sharing experiences and holding
valuable places in each other's lives.
While on a
shopping trip one day, Carmen finds a pair of jeans in a
thrift store. She never wears them and is ready to get rid of them when Tibby
discovers the jeans in Carmen's closet. One by one, Tibby, then Lena,
then Bridget, and finally Carmen try on the pants. Miraculously, the pants fit everyone beautifully,
despite their varying sizes and shapes. The pants, they decide, are
magical. At their
annual break-in to Gilda's Gym, where their moms had first met in an
aerobics class, they decide the pants will keep them close at heart even
though they will be miles apart for the summer. They make rules
regarding the proper wear and care of the pants, and plan to send them to
one another so each may have a magical adventure in the pants. They
mail the
jeans between Washington D.C., Greece, Baja
California, and
South Carolina all summer long.
At soccer camp Bridget
learns a difficult lesson about being physical with a boy. In Greece,
Lena discovers that if you
want something or someone bad enough you have to do something about it.
After leaving South Carolina, Carmen figures out that no matter how her
father's life has changed since the divorce, he will always love her as his daughter. Tibby,
though she stayed home in Washington D.C., discovers a lot about
life and friendship when a loved one reveals that she has Leukemia. At the end of the summer the girls all meet again at Gilda's and write the
story of their summers on the pants.
This would be a
great book for teenage girls. The characters deal with male/female
relationships, changing friendships, death, and growing up. The
Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants illustrates the changes that most
adolescent girls deal with. This is a great book that keeps you on the edge
of your seat.
