MEDIA
COLLAGE
**********DUE
DATE: December 5, 2002 *************
Using James Clifford's article "Ethnographic Surrealism"
as a guide, construct a collage evoking some aspect that interests you
about the mass media's representation of Otherness. Reminder: the
Other is not a Who--it's a What (a concept/idea/social construction).
-
TITLE YOUR COLLAGE with a theme
you wish to emphasize.
-
Select familiar images (and/or text, even objects) from media
sources (magazines, newspapers, ads, TV guide, photos, etc.; you may even
want to include quotes or images from our readings).
-
Juxtapose these materials in a montage of images in such
a way as to provoke the effect of "defamiliarization" that a surrealist
ethnographer might use as a strategy of cultural critique.
Be creative! Remember, in the electronic age, the photocopy
becomes an "original" artistic medium!
Take another look at some surrealist images to get your
imagination going:
