So What???
Did, I Learn!!!
So what did I learn from the immersion that took
place in Dr. K’s class? In the beginning of class I thought it was going
to be easy because I myself am a first generation immigrant that has
experienced many of the things that we saw throughout the class like
crossing the border, work status, and economic struggle (to mention a
few). To my surprise immigration, migration, and many other terms that
finish in ation have a bigger and much broader effect on society and on
individuals themselves.
I have seen how exploitation takes place and the
reason why the US government still permits illegal aliens to cross the
boarder. When September 11 happened I remember that my family was
telling me that it was impossible to cross the boarder, so we realized
that if the Government wanted to stop illegal crossing it has the power
to do it. Much and almost all the factors that revolve migration has to
do with economics. Most people that migrate to the US or other countries
(besides refugees) come or go because of of there financial situation in
there home country.
A major problem is the capitalist society that
we live in. Big corporations many times are responsible for migrants
because they have their factories in other countries that do not pay
enough to sustain a family so they have to come here or other countries
to sustain there family and feed there children.
The most important thing that I learned is that
many times we separate the person from the migrant. A migrant is a human
being that is struggling and many times we become so selfish that we
overlook that. It would be a good idea to put ourselves in the shoes of
those that we blame or criticize and try to feel what they feel in a day
by day basis. I mean overall we are all migrants, everyone that crossed
a border, lake or ocean has experienced it. What makes one migrant
better than the other?
