Background

As a result of WWII, the invasion of the Soviet Union occurred in 1944 and the Soviet established representation within the Bulgarian government.  In 1946 after a rigged election and the execution of leaders or opposing parties a Communist regime established in Bulgaria

In 1989, a political reform campaign broadened.  The resistance to world’s demands weakened and in 1990 the communist party willingly resigned.  The transition into capitalism and the privatization of business and land caused high unemployment and poor economic structure
