My Mother's Fruit Plate

The Item that I chose for my family migration object is a fruit plate of my mother's mother.  This item is one that reminds her on a daily basis of where she migrated from.  My mother migrated to the U.S from Tehran, Iran in 1978.  Basically, the family was looking for a new beginning and they knew that the U.S. would provide plenty of opportunity, both for the children and for parents.  My mom was 16 years old, the youngest in the family.  She has kept a lot of possessions that she had when she was in Iran, but the silver plate is one of her favorites.  She told me that it reminded her of the festive dinners that they used to have.  She said they would always keep out fruits on this plate because it was inviting and also pleasant to guests.  My mother keeps this silver fruit plate hung in our dining room next to our dining room table.  The plate symbolized festivity and spring, as you can see by the two lovestruck birds who are “twitterpating” and the flowers that are blooming all over the plate.  She also loves this possession because it was her mother’s favorite plate.  If anything, it reminds my mother of her mother, she tells me that her mom always made everyone who came to visit feel welcome and that she was quite the party host.  The silver plate reminds my family day to day of the strong family bond that we share, and at the same time reminds us of who we are and where we came from, and never to take anything we have for granted.
