My family object
by Elisa Maldonado
I have brought a torilla press as my family object, to
represent my family migration from Mexico. The tortilla press has
been known over century to facilitate the making of tortillas.
Tortillas arrived in the New World in the late 15th
century. Later became known as tortillas (“Food Timeline, Mexican
and TexMex food history”). Now tortillas are eaten as bread, and
used as plate and spoons. The tortilla press has been used in my
family for many years. It has been brought from Mexico as a utensil
to make traditional Mexican dishes, such as gorditas, homemade
tortillas, tacos, and other good recipes.
The tortilla press is used with a sheet of plastic wrap in the
middle. Pinch off balls of dough from the masa. Center the masa on
lined tortilla-press base. Cover the masa with a sheet of plastic
wrap. Lower the top of the press and push down the handle. Open. The
tortillas will have a plastic wrap on the bottom, which must be
removed and cook them. “A Mexican table without tortillas is an
empty table” (“Food Timeline, Mexican and TexMex food history")
How my family came to the United States? My relatives came from
Mexico. My mother and her siblings originated from Cd. Juarez,
Chihuahua, Mexico but my grandmother was born in Guadalajara,
Jalisco, Mexico. My grandmother was twelve, when her mother took her
to Cd. Juarez Chihuahua and there she had her children, among them,
my mother. My mother migrated into the United States at the age of
18, by the age of 20 she met my father and married him, having three
children
