My Family's Object

My current experience in working for the Department of Homeland Security has opened my eyes to the importance of having a valid status in the United States. In my current position, I assist over a hundred people each day seeking an immigration status. On a daily basis, I am told stories from these very same individuals seeking status and their stories reveal desperation for status as a Permanent Resident.

Like many, my mother entered here without any type of status. She entered the US from Sonora, Obregon illegally at the young age of 15. The year was 1969, and my mother came here alone with just the clothes on her back. You can imagine the many different obstacles and struggles she faced during this time. She eventually was able to become a Permanent Resident during the amnesty of 1983. I truly believe that she was able to become a permanent resident because she was at the right place at the right time. She saw the opportunity to become a permanent resident and she ran with it. This card not only represents my mother’s status in the US, it represents her ambition, determination and drive to make it in a foreign country alone. Not only did she succeed, but she has passed down that same mind setting to myself, my bothers, sisters and the grandchildren that followed.  Unfortunately I do not have a photo of my mothers card availed for you to see mainly because of security purposes so I have decided to include a different image in it's place.
