Border Justice |
During the Migration week at school I went to the panel discussion about the border policies.
the panel consisted of five people, two lawyers, to program activist and a police
officer. The panel discussion was great. They were able to give me a lot of
insight about policies going on around us that I have never known before.
What stood out in my mind the most was what the two lawyers talked about.
The first speaker, was a lawyer for migrant children. Children that have come from thousands of
miles away to find their parents. It broke my heart thinking about these children risking their lives
to come to America. She talked about them hopping onto trains and holding on, praying not to fall off.
And then once reaching America and caught they are treated like criminals. Not able to see their
parents or grab things from home that will make them feel safe. These children are kept in prisons
until they are able to talk to a judge that will ultimately decide their fate. That must be the most
traumatic experience anyone can endure, and yet these are just children having to deal with it. I
can't imagine waking up everyday knowing possibly I could be sent back home. Home which
includes barely the necessities for survival, a survival a child shouldn't have to be put through if I can
be stopped.
The adults also have quite a scary story. The second speakers talks about them being treated
as criminals. She stated that Arizona leases out space in the prison to Alaska to hold their serial
killers, and to Hawaii to house their child molesters. It seems a little ridiculous that some illegal
immigrants should have to be surrounded by such horrible people. They are here to look for a better
life and instead are treating exactly opposite than what United states was build upon. Americans
seem to forget that American stand on the legs of the immigrants. They built this nation and will
continue to help it grow throughout the future.
