The executive office of the American Sociological Association, ASA, is located in Washington D.C. This non-profit organization is dedicated to advancing sociology as a scientific discipline. The agency’s main activities are organized meetings, conferences, newsletters, publications, and awards to foster the development of the sociological study of international migration. The mission statement of the ASA is “ASA serves, advances, and promotes sociology”. Aiming to articulate and implement programs likely to have impact for sociology, the ASA is neither pro nor con immigration, it is an association that promotes research and literature on international migration. They hold ethics in high regard and have a code including “Respect for people’s rights, dignity and diversity”.

The ASA consists of Officers, a Council of six, and committees. The Chair, Phillip Kasinitz, rewards the development of original theory and research on international migration. There is voting and election to determine who holds these offices. They also give out the Distinguished Student Scholarship Award annually in recognition of the recipient’s lifetime contributions to research in the sociology of immigration. The ASA recommends many publications on it’s web site under New International Migration Publications. The publications promote a comprehensive understanding of the causes and consequences of international migration. This association also has the newsletter World on the Move, which people can submit their own work. The ASA web site is located at www.ssc.msu.edu/~intermig/.
