Return to Bridget's Home Page   To the Valley of the Sun Residents,

I am a student at ASU West  who has recently become aware of the growing issues of illegal immigration in our country and especially our state of Arizona.  During the past spring Semester I was enrolled in a class called Migration and Culture.  Not only did this class teach me about these present issues that we face in our community but the problems other immigrants face in other countries.

Our class went to Nogales, Mexico to go on a tour with Borderlinks Network.  This fieldtrip was not the normal shopping excursion that most of us are used to, it was very educational and informational.  I became more aware of why Mexicans leave their homeland and the battles they face along the way.

The question, why don't they just stay where they are from, was cleared up when I ate lunch at a Nogales residents house.  They lived in a little shack with only one room.  In this room was the kitchen, dining room, one bed, one TV that was all squeezed into one area.  They were happy and did not want to move to the United States, but many of their family members had the journey to the United States  to look for work and to have a better living condition.
