My grandparents were both born in Genoa, Italy and grew up together. When my grandfather finished school at the age of 16, he joined the army where he supposed to serve for at least two years.  After six months of service, he became engaged to my grandmother’s best friend who died shortly of complications of strep throat.  My grandfather decided to immigrate to America alone but my grandmother wanted to go and marry him.  He told her no and left to find an “American girl”.  Five months after he left, my grandma received a letter from him asking her to come to American and be his wife.  She wrote back telling him that he would have to send her many nice things to win her over.  This was a joke and she immediately packed and left for the states.  A set of earrings crossed paths with my grandma and she never received them.  It was always a joke that he never gave her anything.  In the 1970s, they traveled back to Genoa together and she was finally convinced that he sent them because she retrieved them from her family’s house.
